Meet Simbi’s Ex-Husband, Cress Williams

One thing that was a surprise to use here at ILOSM, is that she was married to a very popular 90s actor. We all know his face, but many of us never knew his name. His name’s Cress Williams (51), and we know him mostly as being the boyfriend of Queen Latifah’s character on “Living Single”.

He and Simbi Khali were married from 2000-2011. They didn’t have any kids during the marriage, but it seems the marriage ended privately and amicably.

Cress Williams has been extra hot on the TV drama scene, he had a recurring role as “Cole Guthrie” on the HBO series, “Code Black.” Cress is also the main character in CW Network’s hit series, “Black Lightning,” a drama pilot from Greg Berlanti, who’s also responsible for the “Being Mary Jane” duo of Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil.

“The wedding was an intimate affair on the beach, with the bride’s and groom’s parents and Cress’ daughter in attendance,” Williams’ rep said. “After getting married in Kauai, they stayed and honeymooned there for nine more days.”

LATimes reports that he met his new wife in 2006, while still married to Simbi. They met at the church they attended, and became closer friends when they started hosting a weekly dinner party together.

Seems that Cress has a broad taste in women. We’re all for diversifying, but many of Cress’ Black female fans have expressed disappointment solely because his current wife is not Black, and others are wondering how his taste in women suddenly became so diverse…

What most people don’t know is that Cress Williams was born in Heidelberg, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, to American parents. The way race is viewed here in America, is oftentimes different in other countries- with less racial barriers. So could that be the case for Cress Williams? Maybe…and also maybe not. One thing we’ve always dug about Living Single and In Living Color actress, Kim Coles, is her seemingly down-to-earth personality. She’s a very grounded woman, who always appeared to not buy into the Hollywood bourgeois life- even when she was at the height of her career in the 90s.

What we’ve now learned, is that she’s carried that same grounded mentality into her love life, with the man she chose to marry. He’s as far from Hollywood as possible.

Unfortunately, the two are now headed for divorce court, just 4 years after jumping the broom. It’s just been reported that Kim Coles initiated their divorce process, by recently filing the paperwork in court.

At this point, the reason for their divorce is unknown, but since they did not have any children together and were only married for 4 years, it should be a pretty smooth process for both of them. Well…unless they decide to take things to the unfortunate petty levels that Jill Scott’s divorce from her husband of 15 months, Mike Dobson, reached…but, hopefully not.

Anyways, though Kim Coles’ divorce news is disheartening, let us introduce y’all to her husband, who many of her fans never even knew she’d married, and the happier times they shared together…

Who remembers “Kyle Barker” from the 90’s sitcom, “Living Single?” You know…he was the stock broker who always rocked some fresh gear and talked with a touch of class, he had a thing for the ladies…many of them, and “Kyle” eventually only had eyes for the one female he most despised, “Maxine Shaw, attorney at law.” He and his close group of friends, “Overton,” “Regine,” “Khadijah,” “Sinclair,” and “Maxine” all lived in the N.Y. apartment building and had fun times together.

Fast forward to today and actor, Terrence “T.C.” Carson, says not much has changed in real life about their friendship. We’ll get to that in a minute, but first we wanna give the man his props for still getting his bread today.

T.C. has found a new way to bring in the money...

At first glance, Erika and Tony may look like the odd couple to some. Why so? Well because for starters, the obvious reason is Erika is Black and Tony is White. Now here is where it gets a little surprising- Tony is one of the Blackest White men you’ll ever meet because you’re talking about a guy who was neighbors with Malcolm X while growing up and whose parents were heavily involved in the civil rights era.
The other reason we say that, is because Tony isn’t White…well at least not 100% White- Tony is actually a Black man as well. He is often mistaken as being solely Caucasian, but he is half Black and half White and he says that he identifies himself as a Black man only. Here is what Tony explained about his ethnicity:

“I’m from New York City. I’m biracial, but I grew up in a Black neighborhood (Malcolm X was our neighbor) and my family was very involved in the Civil Rights Movement, and though I’m not the darkest brother you ever saw, I have always identified as Black. I went to The Bronx High School of Science and Brown University, where I majored in art.

I’ve worked in advertising and made TV commercials. I directed Hip Hop videos for old-school artists like EPMD, LL Cool J and K-Solo (if your name was an acronym, you hired me). As a screenwriter for the last 20-odd years, I’ve written screenplays for a who’s who of Hollywood’s A-List, from Mel Gibson to Jerry Bruckheimer to Oliver Stone to Will Smith. I became the first African-American screenwriter to write a $100 million+ blockbuster with my 1996 script for “Eraser”, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.”

So ever since they married in 1997 (which they deserve an award for in terms of Hollywood marriages), we’ve been thinking that Erika was with a White brother, but it turns out we were halfway wrong. I tell ya’ we learn something new around here everyday.
