If you ever watched Sesame Street as a kid, you probably remember “Maria.” For 44 years, Sonia Manzano played “Maria” on the ever-popular PBS kids show. Since “Maria” was one of the longest-standing adult characters to appear on Sesame Street, she is still a fond memory to many of us who watched the show because she helped to make so many children happy. In fact, “Maria’s” character touched on a number of topics that are still relevant today. From love and relationships, to motherhood and breastfeeding, “Maria” did a lot on Sesame Street in 44 years. When she announced her retirement back in 2015, fans immediately shared their reaction to the announcement.

But unfortunately, Sonia Manzano’s own childhood wasn’t as ideal as what was depicted on camera. After retiring, Sonia released a book titled, Becoming Maria: Love and Chaos in the South Bronx. The book shed light on Sonia’s life. She detailed a childhood most fans would have never expected due to her role on Sesame Street. Apparently, her childhood was the complete opposite.

Abuse Ruled Her Childhood Home

During an interview with NPR.org, Sonia shared details about her childhood growing up in a Puerto Rican family in the South Bronx area of New York. She recalled how her father’s angry rages were influenced by alcoholism. His violent rages led to physical abuse and her mother was often the target. She admitted she saw her mother abused by her father – something an innocent child should never see. When her father would have violent outbursts, her brothers would go and hide. But, she would try to diffuse the situation:

“I found myself always being in the middle of them — trying to protect her,” she said.

Hidden Knives & Extreme Fear

Her mother even worked hard to cover up the truth from her, discreetly hiding the knives in their home:

“She would discreetly put the knives in the oven and I’d say, “Why are you putting the knives in the oven, Mom?” And she’d say, “Oh, no reason at all.” But as a kid, I’m thinking: Are we going to get hurt? Is there a possibility that he’s going to use the knives? So it was all this kind of confusing take on what was going on.”

Parents’ Past Ignited Father’s Abusive Flaws

So what was the reason for his drinking? Sonia revealed what her mother told her:

“My mother would tell me these stories about Puerto Rico during the Depression — the poverty, the unrelenting struggle to find something to eat … she was one of five orphans. And one of her brothers said to me, ‘We used to hang around someone’s house, and if they gave us a scrap to eat, we’d stay.’ You know how dogs stay around if you throw them a bone? And she would tell me these horrible stories and she would say that my father had gone through similar things. He never shared that.”

Does She Forgive Him Now?

But has she forgiven her father for all he did? She admitted that the situation was, indeed, complex. But she stressed the importance of understanding in order to overcome opposition:

“I had an interview yesterday with somebody and I found myself almost defending my father, which — I’m not doing that. … I’m not going to defend that kind of behavior. But to understand something, I don’t know if it means you forgive it, or condone it. But, understanding something is important.”

“Sesame Street” Helped Her Overcome Past

She went on to explain how Sesame Street offered her comfort and enabled her to overcome the turmoil she faced as a child:

“I found a lot of comfort on television when I was a kid. I would love Father Knows Best and Leave It to Beaver. So I think it’s interesting that I ended up on a show that offered a bit of comfort to children who lived in the inner city.”

We all remember “Olivia” from “Sesame Street” and “Rose” from “227,” right? She impacted our lives back in the day as either the sister-girl friend of “Mary’s” on “227,” or the friendly photography sister of “Gordon” on “Sesame Street.”

Actress, Alaina Reed-Amini, is one of those actresses who we consider to be a rare gem in entertainment and although she touched the lives of many throughout her years in mainstream media, there are still many of us who didn’t hear about her passing due to some lack of mainstream media coverage. That’s why we want to take a minute to shed some light on this incredible actress.

HOW SHE PASSED AWAY

Alaina’s career lasted several decades, but her life was ended when she succumbed to breast cancer at the age of 63 in 2009. She’d been battling the disease for two years and word on the Old School curb is that she still had plans on continuing to work until her last day. It was said that she was supposed to be making a return to “Sesame Street” as “Olivia” in an episode that was tentatively titled “Olivia’s Back” and she had planned on doing so as soon as her cancer treatments were done, but unfortunately she never got to see that day. She originally left “Sesame Street” in 1988, while she continued starring on “227” at that time.

Alaina was married twice in her life and it was during her stint on “227,” that she also met her first husband, whom was an actor that many probably never even realized she had married…

ALAINA MARRIED HER TV HUSBAND FROM “227” IN REAL LIFE

Alaina married the actor who played her husband on 227, Kevin Peter Hall. Kevin was the 7’2″ actor who starred as “The Predator” in the the first two installments of the movie, the predator and he also had the lead role as “Harry” in the TV series and the film, “Harry and the Hendersons.” Alaina and Kevin actually met on the “227” set when Kevin made a guest appearance on the show. Then the producers decided to add him into the regular cast, ultimately making his character Alaina’s husband. Who remembers that beautiful “227” episode where their characters got married in Vegas and Luther Vandross serenaded them at their wedding? Sadly, their real life marriage didn’t last long, here’s why…

KEVIN PETER HALL PASSED AWAY IN 1991

Unfortunately Alaina and Kevin were only able to spend three short years together as husband and wife. Kevin received a tainted blood transfusion in which he contracted the AIDS virus. In 1991 he passed away from AIDS related pneumonia.

HER 2nd MARRIAGE WAS CUT WAY TOO SHORT

A year before Alaina passed away, she married her second husband, Tamim Amini. Tamim is a film director of Persian descent and it’s extremely sad that he only had one short year to call Alaina his wife.

If you from the Old School, then we’re pretty sure you remember watching “Gordon” (Roscoe Orman) and “Susan” (Loretta Long) play a happily married couple, with their adopted son, “Miles,” on “Sesame Street.” Little did most of us know at that time, the kid who played “Miles” from 1985 to 1992, is actually Roscoe Orman’s REAL son. We did a lil’ diggin’ and found him and he also revealed the unfortunate relationship between him and his mother at the time Not sure where the status of their relationship is now, but here’s what we’ve learned thus far…

Roscoe “Gordon” Orman’s Son Now

Roscoe’s son’s real name is actually Miles, just like his former “Sesame Street” character. Miles Orman was 1 year old when he starred on the show as “Gordon’s” and “Susan’s” son. Today, he’s 36, with a family of his own.

A lot has changed about the kid who was once a drooling toddler on TV, learning lessons like, ‘P is for Play’ and such. These days, Miles and his wife of 8 years, Jasaline Orman, are raising two kids of their own – a 10 year old daughter and 5 year old son.

After his lengthy stint on “Sesame Street,” Miles left his acting career behind and instead attended Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY, where he played on their basketball team for 4 years…

Roscoe Orman’s Ex Sues, Says He Left Her After 39 Years For Another Woman

Roscoe Orman (77) was not legally married to Miles’ mother, Sharon Joiner (66), but they were common law husband and wife after 4 kids and living together for 39 years. In 2013, “Gordon” may have been teaching kids that ‘O is for owl,’ but in real life he learned that ‘P is for palimony.’ Why? Because that’s exactly what the courts ordered him to pay Sharon, after she sued him for reportedly leaving her broke and homeless for a another woman- his now wife, Kimberley LaMarque-Orman (shown below with Orman).

Although Roscoe tried to fight against having to legally pay Sharon any support, the court ruled in Sharon’s favor. It noted that simply because they were not bonded in a written agreement (marriage), they lived like husband and wife in every since of the words.

Via NJ.com: “The court finds the plaintiff (Joiner) has fully performed her end of the bargain (to put it tersely),” Rosenberg wrote. “In addition, there is no way to qualify the value of the services plaintiff provided over the course of 39 years much less the value of foregone educational and work related opportunities. What is more, the defendant [Roscoe Orman] does not deny the agreement and even acknowledged the obligation by deeds and words.”

After moving out of their four-bedroom home in 2010, Orman continued paying Joiner-Orman $3,600 in monthly support payments[…] But he cut off support in late December 2012 when he married, the ruling states.

Their split was filled with heartbreak, but as we all know, sometimes people simply grow apart. Unfortunately, it also seems that is what has now transpired between Sharon and their son…

Son Gives Emotional Message About His Mom

In a touching (now deleted) online post, Miles Orman wrote this about the status of his relationship with his mother, Sharon Joiner:

“Looking through my pics I found one of my favorites of me and my mom. It made me sad..we haven’t spoken in quite some time. Throughout my life our relationship has been pretty tough to navigate. In a new interview with Queerty, ex-Sesame Street writer, Mark Saltzman, confirmed for the first time ever, that “Ernie & Bert” were patterned after his real life relationship with his now deceased longtime love of 20 years, Arnold Glassman – who was also a film director. According to Mark, his and Arnold’s (he refers to him as Arnie) opposite personalities were very prevalent in “Ernie & Bert”…

Mark Saltzman: “I remember one time that a column from The San Francisco Chronicle, a preschooler in the city turned to mom and asked ‘are Bert & Ernie lovers?’ And that, coming from a preschooler was fun. And that got passed around, and everyone had their chuckle and went back to it. And I always felt that without a huge agenda, when I was writing Bert & Ernie, they were. I didn’t have any other way to contextualize them. The other thing was, more than one person referred to Arnie & I as ‘Bert & Ernie.'”

He continued…

MS: “Yeah, I was Ernie. I look more Bert-ish. And Arnie as a film editor—if you thought of Bert with a job in the world, wouldn’t that be perfect? Bert with his paper clips and organization? And I was the jokester. So it was the Bert & Ernie relationship, and I was already with Arnie when I came to ‘Sesame Street.’ So I don’t think I’d know how else to write them, but as a loving couple. I wrote sketches… Arnie’s OCD would create friction with how chaotic I was. And that’s the Bert & Ernie dynamic. …

That’s what I had in my life, a Bert & Ernie relationship. How could it not permeate? The things that would tick off Arnie would be the things that would tick off Bert.”

Even though Mark says he wrote the characters in a reflection of his relationship, he never outright confirmed that to the “Sesame Street” staff at that time:

“I will say that I would never have said to the head writer, ‘Oh, I’m writing this, this is my partner and me.’ But those two, Snuffalupagus, because he’s the sort of clinically depressed Muppet…you had characters that appealed to a gay audience. And Snuffy, this depressed person nobody can see, that’s sort of Kafka! It’s sort of gay closeted too.”

Well I’ll be… all these years, we’ve been thinking that “Bert & Ernie” were more like “Felix” and “Oscar” from “The Odd Couple” sitcom. But turns out, they were just a loving gay couple out here living their best lives, like Lil’ Duval, on “Sesame Street.”

“Gordon’s” Ex’s Claims

Sharon Orman filed a lawsuit against Roscoe in 2013, for palimony support, after she says he left for a younger woman, whom he’s since married. During that time, Sharon also did an interview with Page Six and that’s when she shocked many- including Roscoe- with the outside baby revelation that they’d managed to keep secret for decades.

She told the publication that she was hella surprised when her husband received a paternity lawsuit in the mail 31 years ago, while she, too, was pregnant with their son, Miles (yep, the kid who played “Gordon and Susan’s” son on “Sesame Street”). The paternity suit was from Deborah Hill, a woman he’d had sex with, after meeting her in Beaverton, Ore., while on the road with the “Sesame Street” cast.

I know…”Sesame Street” and sex are two words that should probably never go together in one sentence, but apparently Roscoe has made that all possible. See what else his ex said about this below:

Via Page Six: “I was pregnant with my third kid. We were ecstatic,” Sharon said. “Then a paternity suit arrived in the mail. I’m pregnant, and another woman in a different state is pregnant at the same time.” […]

Sharon told us that Roscoe paid Hill, who was on welfare after getting pregnant, child support until Kalah was 18, and put her through college. Meanwhile, Roscoe and Sharon had another daughter and stayed together in New Jersey. When asked why she didn’t leave Roscoe then, Sharon told us: “I wasn’t going to jump up and leave my family.” A lawyer for Roscoe didn’t get back to us.

“Gordon’s” Love Child Now Painfully Speaks Out

Like we mentioned earlier, the baby at the center of the controversy is now 31 years old and her name is Kalah Hill. She’s apparently lived with some resentment and pain as a result of being the excluded love child from a one night stand between her father, Roscoe Orman, and her mom, Deborah Hill. That pain is clear in the beautiful throwback photo and poem she recently shared online, titled “Love Child”:

Although Roscoe tried to fight against having to legally pay Sharon any support, the court ruled in Sharon’s favor. It noted that simply because they were not bonded in a written agreement (marriage), they lived like husband and wife in every since of the words.

Via NJ.com: “The court finds the plaintiff (Joiner) has fully performed her end of the bargain (to put it tersely),” Rosenberg wrote. “In addition, there is no way to qualify the value of the services plaintiff provided over the course of 39 years much less the value of foregone educational and work related opportunities. What is more, the defendant [Roscoe Orman] does not deny the agreement and even acknowledged the obligation by deeds and words.”

After moving out of their four-bedroom home in 2010, Orman continued paying Joiner-Orman $3,600 in monthly support payments[…] But he cut off support in late December 2012 when he married, the ruling states.

Their split was filled with heartbreak, but as we all know, sometimes people simply grow apart. Unfortunately, it also seems that is what has now transpired between Sharon and their son…
