ILOSM fam,’ a few years ago, we covered the consistent drama going on between the late Teddy Pendergrass’ widow of two years, Joan Pendergrass, and his three children (from prior relationships). Ever since their father passed away in 2010, Teddy P. II, LaDonna Hollerway, and Tishia Pendergrass have been battling it out in court with Mrs. Pendergrass. The legal battle is due to what Teddy’s kids say is a very suspect will that left Joan pretty much everything and damn near nothing to his mother, Ida (who was still living at the time of his death), nor his kids – all of whom Teddy had close relationships with. Now there’s more drama…

Why Teddy P.’s Wife Is Suing His Kids

Throwback pic of Teddy with his son, Teddy II (in white shirt)

It’s just been reported that Mrs. Pendergrass has decided to hit Teddy’s three kids-  Teddy II, Tishia, and LaDonna- with a lawsuit for a whopping $850K+! Why? Because according to Joan, their lawsuit filing to dispute her will, with another will they said their dad left behind, was deemed to be falsified by the judge. Therefore Joan, who won everything, including the rights to Teddy’s estate and future revenues, now wants Teddy P.’s kids to pay back the $850K she says she lost in legal fees, plus punitive damages, according to court docs.

The lawsuit stated that “The illusion and fantasy created by Theodore, Jr. and propagated by his lawyers, forced Mrs. Pendergrass to undergo years of turmoil and anguish as her relationship with her late husband was unmercifully scrutinized.”

Joan Pendergrass is mad that the lawsuit took 6 years to fight and she wants to be compensated for the damage to her reputation, turmoil and more that she says it’s caused her. There are so many layers to the backstory of this though…see them below…

Why Many Think Pendergrass Should Have Never Married His Mrs.

As we previously reported, many people think that if Teddy Pendergrass were alive to see what is actually happening as a result of that will, he would probably conclude that he married the wrong woman. Joan has caught a ton of flack over the will, which many believe was signed under some shady circumstances. Why has that been such a speculation, you ask? For a few reasons.

The problem that Teddy’s kids and many other folks have with this picture, is that they are having a very hard time wrapping their minds around the fact that -according to the will that was presented by Joan- Teddy P. would do such a thing to those he loved most. Teddy had great relationships with his three children and his mother, Ida Geraldine Epps (who was 91 at the time of Teddy’s death), but yet, the will  left everything he’d worked so hard for since the late 1960’s, solely to the woman he was married to for the last two years of his life. The will also gives Mrs. Pendergrass 100% control over Teddy P.’s estate and names her as the sole beneficiary. All of this is what Teddy’s children claim is completely uncharacteristic of their father.

Shortly after winning the lawsuit against Teddy’s kids in 2015, which was then appealed by them, Joan’s attorney, Helen McCrary, said that Joan is moving forward with plans for a movie and other products. McCrary said the appeal could not change Joan Pendergrass’ status as administrator of the estate. “We’re not concerned with it except for the fact that they just can’t seem to rest without bothering Joan,” McCrary said.

And thus, here we are, witnessing yet again, more unfortunate drama Teddy Pendergrass’ kids have to go through with his wife in 2018, eight years after the music icon took his last breath.  ILOSM family, talk to us and let us know your thoughts on this one.

ILOSM fam’ we thought we’d share with you some new pics of the late, great Teddy Pendergrass’ daughter, LaDonna Pendergrass. Back in the day she and her siblings were often pictured with their Pops as kids, but now they’re in their early 40’s.  LaDonna’s a beautiful down south, ‘sweet potatoes and cornbread-fed’ type of sista, hailing from Memphis, TN and she has no prob’ showing it off. See what we mean below…

Teddy Pendergrass was busy and he was also admittedly a known ladies man in his heyday. It turns out that while many of us were making love and making babies to a Teddy P. slow jam back in te day, so was he.

In his book, “Truly Blessed,” Teddy Pendergrass detailed his relationship with a rich girlfriend of his, who was well known around the entertainment circle. He admitted that he was deeply in love with her and her name was Taazmayia Lang. Taaz was sadly murdered under very suspicious circumstances and Teddy P. explained what happened on the night of her murder and why he never recovered from her death.

Teddy PendergrassTeddy Pendergrass was on top of the world throughout the 70’s and 80’s. He was widely known as the R&B singer who women threw their panties at whenever he performed.

A true sex symbol in the eyes of the public…then it all came crashing down March 18, 1982, when the brakes on his Rolls-Royce failed, causing the car to hit a metal guardrail, cross into oncoming traffic, and ram into a tree. Once the smoke settled, Pendergrass suffered a broken neck, a crushed spinal cord, and damage to vital nerves. He was unconscious for eight days and, when he regained consciousness, he learned that he was paralyzed and would be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

So it got to a point where Pendergrass couldn’t handle his new condition and was ready to check out of here by committing suicide, an act that some would consider to be a ‘sin.’ He revealed in his 1998 autobiography, Truly Blessed, that he tried very hard to convince his then-wife, Karen (pictured above), to do him one last favor. He asked Karen to…

When Teddy Pendergrass was with Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes it is without question that they gave us some of the most CLASSIC Old School jams.

Unfortunately those classics didn’t come without a price, according to Teddy P. As Teddy revealed in his autobiography, Truly Blessed, his fellow group member (and the man in charge), Harold Melvin apparently applied some pimp-like tactics being to Teddy and the rest of the Blue Notes. I’m talking a couple incidents that had a very Mack movie feel to them – slapping, money jackin’ – the whole nine. Things got ugly, but we can learn something from this ILOSM family. Here’s what Teddy P. said, in his own words, about what he went through in the group…

Teddy Pendergrass tried very hard to convince his then-wife, Karen to give him an overdose of sleeping pills, probably because he couldn’t get the pills inside of his mouth himself. Of course his wife denied his request and Teddy P. continued to suffered severe depression and insomnia for years after the accident.

“We cried and decided that wouldn’t be the best thing to do.”

He credited Karen with helping him “through a lot of hard times.” There was a turning point though. His road to recovery began when he tried out his voice by singing along with a coffee commercial on TV. Although he had been warned by doctors that he might not ever be able to sing again, Pendergrass realized that his voice was still in tact.

“Nothing ever sounded as sweet to my ears as my version of that silly damn jingle,” he wrote in Truly Blessed. Pendergrass sought help from a quadriplegic therapist, who helped him exorcize thoughts of suicide through the staging of a mock funeral.

In addition to his disability, Pendergrass had to defend himself against rumors that his accident had been caused by excessive alcohol and drug use. Although Philadelphia police cited Pendergrass for reckless driving, they found no evidence that alcohol or drugs had contributed to the crash.

Another rumor circulated that Pendergrass’s passenger at the time of the accident, Tenika Watson, was actually a transgender he was dating but that was 100% FALSE. He’d just offered her a ride home and had never met Tenika prior to that night. That rumor was finally laid to rest once and for all, just last year when the transgender woman, Tenika Watson, gave a very thorough, detail by detail account of what happened that night and she proved from in her own words that she never knew Teddy P. and that he never knew she was a transgender.

Oftentimes when life throws us curve balls, as long as we’re still breathing after being hit by them, we always know things could be worse. It’s all about standing on the outside of our situation and asking ourselves a simple question: ‘What is it that I have?’ Once we’re clear on that, we then understand our starting point and can ultimately figure out how to take a step from point A to point B and beyond. Teddy P. did just that. He eventually dug his way out of a depression that almost took his life and he went on to continue his life’s work. Job well done Teddy P….rest well.

marvin gaye and janis

If reality TV would have existed back in the day, Marvin Gaye and his then-wife, Janis Gaye would have garnered ratings that were through the roof. Their colorful escapades -and in this case, their sexscapades- make today’s reality shows look like Sesame Street in comparison.

Jan, is released a memoir in May 2015, titled After the Dance: My Life With Marvin Gaye and a lot of the details she’s revealing are mind blowing! One of the things Jan is talking about in this book is how she had an affair behind Marvin’s back with R&B singers…

teddy p and wife 6

It’s been five years since Teddy Pendergrass passed away and many people have been stating that Joan Pendergrass, Teddy P.’s wife of two years, has done Teddy’s children wrong. Of course Teddy’s children have had a whole lot to say about the matter that now involves multiple lawsuits, foul play accusations, and family separation.

In a nutshell, there are plenty of unresolved issues between his widow, Joan, whom he married in 2008 (just 2 years before Teddy P. passed away) and his four children. So why are Teddy’s kids and some of his fans saying Joan did his kids dirty? It’s because…

teddy p and bill cosby blog pic

Teddy Pendergrass revealed in his book, “Truly Blessed” (which is a good read by the way) that there was an incident where Bill Cosby caused him a great deal of public shame shortly after Teddy’s paralyzing car accident.

Although it doesn’t necessarily sound like Cosby did it intentionally, that didn’t make Teddy P. any less embarrassed or angry at him about it. Here’s what he said happened…

When Teddy P. was scheduled to present Bill Cosby an award at a function in Philadelphia. Here’s what Teddy wrote about that:

“Bill came on stage, then surprised me and everyone else there by walking up to me, dropping a microphone in my lap and saying, “I’m not leaving here until you pick up that mike.” This was totally unplanned and I was taken aback. As I sat in my wheelchair, all I could do was shake my head no. I couldn’t even venture to guess why Bill was doing this. Did he think he was helping me? That putting me on the spot like this and making me struggle was somehow good for me? If Bill really knew me, he’d know how much I’d overcome just to be there. I thought Bill would get the message when I refused, so you can imagine my shock and horror when he shouted, “I’m not leaving here until you pick up that mike!” A nervous silence fell over the crowd. I was embarrassed, humiliated and furious. Didn’t he realize how devastated I’d be if I failed.

What do you think ILOSM fam’? Was Mr. Cosby trying to help Teddy P. by challenging him to not be any less of an entertainer than what he was prior to his car accident? Or was Cosby trying to embarrass him intentionally?
