In an interview with AreYouTheReason, Troy (56), who was born to an African American mother and Jewish father in 1964, detailed exactly what life was like for her as a kid. It wasn’t pretty by far, but her babysitter, Whoopi Goldberg (yes, THAT Whoopi), was able to help her through some of it:

In an interview with Vlad TV, Fillmore Slim claims Whoopi damn near canceled him from this earth after their random meeting outside of a San Francisco, CA motel.

Fillmore Slim: “We had a incident – this was before she [Whoopi Goldberg] was a star- and she was down there [in pimp territory in San Francisco, CA] and had this big house. …She was studying to be a actress. She didn’t know me and I didn’t know her.”

Fillmore says he and Whoopi got into an argument when Whoopi tried to use the pay phone he was occupying at the time. He alludes to pimp slapping Whoopi…or something of the sort:

“Whoopi Goldberg, ya know…she was dressed like a militant at the time. And she didn’t know who I was and that I was from San Francisco. So we had a misunderstanding about the telephone….and uh…the argument got a lil’ heated. And me being pimpin,’ I had to straighten her out.”

FYI: Pimps used pay phones to communicate with their prostitutes and potential customers on a daily basis back then. “She [Whoopi] went back home and I thought she was going to get her man -I ain’t know who she was. Ya know, she was dressed militant…like she was in the army or something. … So I thought she was going get her man in the motel, [which] I was staying at on the bottom floor.

The phone booth was right there, so I was on my knee, looking at the phone booth with my pistol, because I didn’t know who she was going to get. [So I was] gon’ go outside and talk to the gentlemen.”

Fillmore was shocked when he saw Whoopi come back alone:

“She came back…but she had a rifle up under her coat and she was walking ‘round looking for me, looking for me.”

What happened when he ran into Whoopi the next day:

“So the next day I saw [Whoopi] at the supermarket where the actors go, up there on Holland [Ave.]. I said uh, ‘How you doing? You was gon’ shoot me, wasn’t you?’ She said ‘Yeah, I was pretty MAD at you!’”

I said, ‘But sista we both from the Bay Area, I’m from San Francisco too.’ …Ya know, we shined that off…we hugged each other and that was that. No malices.”

Sure, the way “Old Mister” despised and ridiculed “Celie’s” (Whoopi Goldberg) appearance made us wanna hurl a fast flying object at the screen, but it was a necessary evil for the greater good of the film’s overall messages of oppression, colorism, and triumph. Mr. Caesar’s delivery in The Color Purple was unmatched, and he made us believe that his character was real. Simply put, he was one of those actors who didn’t just act out his lines, he became his character.

The thing that never ceases to amaze us, is that Adolph Caesar is another legendary actor, who starred in one of the most iconic films in history. However, when he passed away –over three decades ago– there wasn’t as much mainstream media coverage of his death, like many fans probably would have expected for a man who contributed so much to the film industry. That is what propelled us to shine some light and love on this brotha…

Adolph Caesar Sadly Passed Away While Filming…

Though he oftentimes played much older characters, Adolph Caesar just 52 years young when he died. He passed away on March 6, 1986, after suffering a major heart attack while he was on a Los Angeles movie set, filming scenes for the movie, Tough Guys. The paramedics were called and by the time he’d arrived to the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, it was reported that he was in full cardiac arrest, ultimately dying just a few minutes after arriving to the hospital.

Caesar was survived by his two daughters, who were teenagers at the time, his then one year old son, and his wife, Diane Caesar (pictured below).

We’ve heard all too often about celebrities who have died in the midst of doing what they love most. For instance, the legendary Redd Foxx died in 1991 after suffering a heart attack on the set of his TV show, The Royal Family, and the list goes on and on.

The pressures that many celebs face while working on a project and having to constantly be ‘on,’ can lead to a very high level of anxiety and excitement, causing their bodies to just go into overload mode. The reality is that this can happen to any of us ILOSM family. We’re Old Schoolers and we’re not getting any younger in this game of life –wiser, yes…but not younger– so if we’re not already doing so, let’s remember to do everything we can to stay on top of our health and manage our stress as well.

Here at ILOSM, we’re grateful that we can still learn from the iconic Old School entertainers we admire, even after they are long gone from this earth. There are valuable lessons they’ve taught us through their lives and legacies, and there are also very valuable lessons they’re sometimes teaching us in their unfortunate deaths. We salute Adolph Caesar for being one of the most seasoned actors to have ever done it! May his legacy continue to live on.

He continued, explaining that he and Whoopi got into an argument when she apparently tried to use the pay phone that he was occupying at the time. Fillmore alludes that he ended up pimp slapping Whoopi…or something of the sort:

“Whoopi Goldberg, ya know…she was dressed like a militant at the time. And she didn’t know who I was and that I was from San Francisco. So we had a misunderstanding about the telephone….and uh…the argument got a lil’ heated. And me being pimpin,’ I had to straighten her out.”

Though Fillmore didn’t explain the payphone drama, it is widely known that pimps used pay phones to communicate with their prostitutes and potential customers on a daily basis. Since Fillmore was a known pimp in that area and had street clout, it’s presumed that whenever he and his girls were working the area, folks knew not to mess with him, nor the pay phone he stood near.
