At ILOSM, we always bring you Old School news with a new point of view, and like we always say: We can learn a lot from the lives of our favorite celebs- regardless of if it is what to do, or what not to do. These entertainers cannot have great success, without naturally experiencing many great failures and that’s okay, because just like the rest of us, their flawed human beings.

As is the case with a popular 80’s R&B singer who was married to a big time drug kingpin in the 80’s when her career was in full flight and he was moving more kilos than “Nino Brown” from New Jack City. This guy was known to the Hollywood world, and in the streets, as one of the biggest cocaine suppliers on the west coast and he was raking in millions of dollars. Who do you think it is?

Who Is His Ex-Wife?

Cherrelle
Cherrelle

It’s Ms. “Saturday Love,” Cherrelle, who married the notorious Los Angeles drug kingpin, Dana Gold, back in the 80’s.

Although Cherrelle has frequently talked about her other ex, singer Ran (of the group, Rick, Ran, and Dan), who tragically passed away in the 90’s, she never really publicly discusses her ex-husband, Dana, in interviews. Not sure why, but industry folks know about them and Dana himself released a documentary about his days in the dope dealing circle, where he also verified that he was married to Cherrelle in the 80’s. You can check out a short video clip of her ex discusiing this below. Dana Gold talks about his ex-wife, Cherrelle, at approximately the 3:18 mark:

Wow, after watching the video maybe now I can understand why Cherrelle doesn’t necessarily want to go around blasting this information to anyone with ears…it’s not always easy for everyone to understand living that lifestyle, but again: great success does not come without great failures. So as far as Cherrelle’s ex-husband, hey we live and we learn, that doesn’t make her or anyone else who may be in the situation she was in, a bad person, it simply makes them a person- a perfectly flawed human being.

Anyways, I still love me some Cherrelle and I still blast her music to this very day. Looking good Cherelle…keep doing your thing!

ILoveOldSchoolMusic- Old School News With A New Point Of View

irene cara young large pic

Remember when Irene Cara was all over our radio and TV screens in the 70’s and 80’s?

She’s accomplished many things in music and film: she was a Fame actress and sang the show’s theme song and another Fame hit, “Out Here On My Own,” which was the first time two songs from the same film were Academy Award nominated in the same category and sang by the same artist. She had radio blowing up with the Flashdance song, “What A Feeling,” and don’t even talk about her dynamic role in the classic film, Sparkle. Then we barely heard from her after that. Well now we’ve found her and she’s still got it!

After the 80’s, Irene was still doing her thing, but on a much more low key level: Cara worked as a

Teddy Pendergrass revealed in his book, “Truly Blessed” (which is a good read by the way) that there was an incident where Bill Cosby caused him a great deal of public shame shortly after Teddy’s paralyzing car accident.

Although it doesn’t necessarily sound like Cosby did it intentionally, that didn’t make Teddy P. any less embarrassed or angry at him about it. Here’s what he said happened…

When Teddy P. was scheduled to present Bill Cosby an award at a function in Philadelphia. Here’s what Teddy wrote about that:

“Bill came on stage, then surprised me and everyone else there by walking up to me, dropping a microphone in my lap and saying, “I’m not leaving here until you pick up that mike.” This was totally unplanned and I was taken aback. As I sat in my wheelchair, all I could do was shake my head no. I couldn’t even venture to guess why Bill was doing this. Did he think he was helping me? That putting me on the spot like this and making me struggle was somehow good for me? If Bill really knew me, he’d know how much I’d overcome just to be there. I thought Bill would get the message when I refused, so you can imagine my shock and horror when he shouted, “I’m not leaving here until you pick up that mike!” A nervous silence fell over the crowd. I was embarrassed, humiliated and furious. Didn’t he realize how devastated I’d be if I failed.

What do you think ILOSM fam’? Was Mr. Cosby trying to help Teddy P. by challenging him to not be any less of an entertainer than what he was prior to his car accident? Or was Cosby trying to embarrass him intentionally?

We’ve been laughing at this video nonstop. Diana Ross’ daughter, actress Tracee Ellis Ross is saying EXACTLY what we Old Schoolers are thinking every time we’re subjected to some of this so-called music on the radio today. It’s sad that the state of today’s music has resorted to this, but hey, at least Tracee took lemons and made lemonade by finding the humor in this particular song. Check out this video out and prepare to laugh.

In case you want to see the video for the song Tracee’s trying to decode, you can check out that “masterpiece” on the next page. Let us know if you were able to understand it any better than Tracee did.

D’Angelo isn’t the most talkative dude in the world, but after making his big comeback recently, he took one major opportunity to talk…and he had a LOT to say about things he went through back in the days of “Brown Sugar” and now.

So yeah, you read the headline of this story correctly- “Ms. Material Girl” Madonna allegedly tried to get with D’Angelo (and some say that she tried this more than once), but he wasn’t really feeling her and her advances apparently led to her getting the cold shoulder from D.

According to a GQ magazine interview he did, this is…

The late, great Barry White a.k.a. “The Maestro” has left a surprise for most of us, because many of us have never even seen, nor heard of his sons. He has two: Barry Jr., and Darryl White. He also has three daughters: Nina, Shaheerah, and Melva, and we’ll swing back to them at a later time.

The Bar Is High

Right now we’re talking about his son Darryl. I won’t spend the time trying to describe what you’re about to see, because a video can speak louder than words. So all I’ll say is that I don’t think most of us were expecting to hear this. One quick note; we gotta give credit where it’s due because Darryl’s in the shadow of a great soulful artist like Barry White, and the bar is HIGH! So kudos to Darryl White for exploring his possible gift of song!

Check out his music video below and let us know what you think. R.I.P. to the remarkable, Barry White.

After His Ex-Stepmother

Glodean White was married to Barry White for 29 years (1974-2003) and she was one his Love Unlimited backup singers. She’s his second-wife and the former step-mother of Darryl.

It’s just been reported that Darryl has filed a lawsuit against Glodean, because he says that he is almost homeless as a result of her having cut him off financially ever since 2015.

Via TMZ: Barry White’s son is almost broke and nearly homeless … and he claims it’s all because he’s getting the raw end of the deal from his father’s trust. Darryl says Glodean never let him see the will after Barry died in 2003, instead it was more like … trust me.

In docs, obtained by TMZ, he says he agreed and got payments up until September 2015. Darryl, who’s a singer himself, believes Glodean is using up his father’s dough to support her lavish lifestyle. He’s suing to finally get a look at the will, and a proper accounting of what he’s due.

When you think of Cameo, you instantly think of the red cup wearing dude, Larry Blackmon. His style is wild, his singing voice is unique, and the last thing you would probably think the son of a brotha who’s performed in front of millions, wearing a cup on the outside of his pants, would be doing is what his 40 year old son does.

‘Politician’ is the “code word” and “no matter where you say it” his son’s name, Larry Scott Blackmon, will be heard, well at least in the state of New York it will be, which is where Larry Scott has been heavily involved in the world of politics for the last 16 years. Larry and his Pops are about as different as a Baptist reverend and a rock n’ roll star and Larry Scott Blackmon has…

Club Nouveau members: Samuelle Prater (L), Valeriw Watson (R), and founding member, Jay King (R)
Club Nouveau members: Samuelle Prater (L), Valerie Watson (R), and founding member, Jay King (R) (via Facebook)

Club Nouveau is back with new music, so “we be jammon, we be jammon” again, but why did they break up in the first place? They were at the height of their success when they did. Jay King (the founder of the group and owner of Jay Records) said they split up because in the late 80’s, they had major tension toward each other.

First off, the reason Club Nouveau was even formed was because Jay King (owner of their record label, Jay Records and founding member of Club Nouveau) produced the hit, “Rumors” for Timex Social Club, but he did not write the song, nor own the name of that group. “Rumors” was written by members, Marcus Thompson (founding member of Timex Social Club), Alex Hill and Michael Marshall.

After their #1 success, the members of Timex signed a record deal with another label without telling Jay, he was mad about that and had a ton of songs leftover, so he formed his own group, Club Nouveau, in 1986, which consisted of himself, Denzil Foster, Thomas McElroy, Samuelle Prater, and Valerie Watson. That explains the similarities between both groups.

So how did things change so quickly though? Jay King said:

“I wanted to say what I wanted to say and I had the power to do so at that point. My contract had changed. Nobody could tell me anything. I could do anything I wanted to, I was in charge. Denzil and Thomas, who were my partners in production, felt like I was getting way too much credit and they were not getting their just due. So we started fighting with each other. Samuelle was friends with Denzil, so we both battled. When the group began to split, Samuelle went with the people he knew, Denzil and Thomas (who would go on to found EnVogue). Valerie went with the person she knew—which was me—because she was like my little sister. It was a tumultuous time for me.”

He further explained that the other guys started to distance themselves from him, including Benny Medina (who would go on to produce The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and who signed Club Nouveau to Warner Bros.). So Jay lost his music industry buddies for a while, but now that is changing.

He said this about the dangers of fame:

“A lot of what we as artists go through is stuff that we put ourselves through. Success is probably the most dangerous drug you can partake in. Success will give you power and access like you never had before and if you don’t know how to handle success, it can kill you. Fame is more powerful than cocaine and heroin.”

Jay’s analogy about fame and drugs is interesting and sadly, this is a story we here about groups all too often. Club Nouveau’s story is ending on a happy note though because like we said, they’re BACK! Check out their video above and tell us if you think they’ve still got it.

As far as the members of Timex Social Club, we’ll be back with their side, because as the Old School saying goes: ‘There are two sides to every story.’ In the meantime, you can check out the founding member of Timex Social Club, Marcus Thompson’s book, “How Do Rumors Get Started”…he’s telling it all in that one!

Marvin-Gaye-Dad-2We’re at odds many times with our “Old School Stories, With A New Point Of View”, but because of our love of soul music, we can’t help but to read, research listen, and just get engulfed in the elements from the soul music era. And from this story, we realize that with everything that we’ve learned about Marvin Gaye so far, the fact that he could reach a level of greatness is inspiring. There is a lesson in this story, and many other stories that we’ve written here, and once you read the story, you may agree with our point of view, which is; that regardless to what you may be going thru, the household that you’re living in, or the conditions of your life at the current moment, you can achieve greatness. You know the old school saying, “Make chicken salad from chicken @#it!

Brown’s daughter, Venisha, dancing in honor of her Dad

The apple definitely didn’t fall far from the tree! The Godfather of Soul’s daughter has some SERIOUS skills that she clearly learned directly from her Dad. Y’all gotta check this one out! (VIDEO)

One of the ILOSM crew over here was sent this video of James Brown’s daughter, Venisha Brown, cuttin’ up at a performance with Mr. Brown’s band, and we just had to share it with our ILOSM family. The main reason we thought this was a great video to showcase, is because with all of the drama and negative press that the Brown family has endured over the years since Mr. Brown’s passing (because of the continued legal problems with James Brown’s estate) we wanted to spread a lil’ bit of sunshine on the Brown children for a change. This video is perfect timing for that and trust me, Venisha Brown will not let you down…she killed it with her performance! Click the video to check it out.
