Teena Marie was the 8 year old little girl who was tap dancing on “The Beverly Hillbillies!” It’s so cool to see the little Teena WAY before she became the “Portugese Love” soul sangin’ Teena! Watch her do her thing in this “Hillbillies” clip:

Teena started singing at the age of 2. The first song she learned was Harry Belafonte’s “Banana Boat Song.” By the time she was 8, her parents, Thomas and Mary began taking her on auditions for acting and singing gigs, which quickly landed her the little tap dancer role on “The Beverly Hillbillies,” and her name on the credits was listed as Tina Marie Brockert. Like we always say, we learn something new around here everyday!

Speaking of Teena Marie, we wanted to reminisce about her and the legendary Rick James’ relationship. We have all wondered what was the extent of the relationship with Rick James and Teena Marie. We thought they were engaged, married, had a child together, or maybe that they were soul mates. Well, Rick James spoke about this prior to his passing. He set the record straight about the extent of the relationship and what she would do to him whenever he pissed her off:

“The first time Teena Marie and I made love was during a tour in Pittsburgh. She wrote a song about it called “Portuguese Love.” She told me later that I was the first one to ever give her an orgasm. We made love from sundown to sunup. But, we were never boyfriend and girlfriend. I would always tell her that I prided myself on maintaining my freedom. Sometimes if she was angry about other women she’d curse me under her breath when we sang, “Fire And Desire.”

It doesn’t seem as if Teena ever spoke directly about the intimate side of their relationship, except for the time she musically documented their complex love affair in her hit song, “Casanova Brown.” But in a past interview, here’s what she stated about Rick James:

“He was my musical soul mate. We were like an extension of each other. I miss all our talks. We were like family; only family can talk about family, not anyone else.” Source

We miss both of these legends, but their memories and beautiful music will continue to live on.

MEET VANESSA WILLIAMS’ FAMOUS DAUGHTER NOW

Jillian Hervey is the daughter of Ramon Hervey (Vanessa’s ex-husband) and the legendary, Vanessa Williams. You may not know her by her name, but her neo-soul group, Lionbabe (of which Jillian’s the lead singer), is very well known amongst their hundreds of thousands of fans.

When Lion Babe came together, their goal wasn’t just to deliver good music, but they wanted to send a message to the world. Lion Babe’s motto is about embracing your uniqueness and rockin’ it. The neo-soul group is comprised of two members: vocalist, Jillian Hervey, and record producer, Lucas Goodman.

The group derived it’s name from Goodman’s zodiac sign, as he is a Leo and from Hervey’s golden mane, which resembles that of a lion.

Both Goldman and Hervey made a musical connection when Hervey was attending a New York college. A dance major interested in performance art, Hervey had the task of performing a dance to original music.  She knew exactly who to call.

After contacting Goodman, they had a conversation that led to Hervey’s interest in signing. Goodman encouraged her and he believed her soulful sound was very similar to Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu.

With a strong underground following, the group has opened up for rapper, Childish Gambino (a.k.a. actor, Donald Glover), and collaborated with super music producer, Pharrell Williams. In 2015,  Lion Babe released the song, “Wonder Woman,” which went on to peak at number one on Billboard’s interactive chart, ‘Billboard Twitter Emerging Artists.’

While Lion Babe’s fan base is growing, lioness, Jillian Hervey, wants her success to be authentic. In speaking with Page Six, she shared how she avoids telling people who her famous moms is, because she wants to make it on her own merits. She spoke openly about keeping her familial connection to Vanessa on the low:

“I never walk into a room and say, ‘Hi! I am Vanessa Williams’ daughter,’ ” [Jillian Hervey] told Page Six at Hammerstein Ballroom. “It helps me to become more authentic.”

People loved her before, but Jillian just gave fans another reason to fall in love with the Lion Babe.

A while back, Howard sat down exclusively with I LOVE OLD SCHOOL MUSIC, and broke down the differences between what he’s encountered with groupies in both the R&B and gospel industries; as well as if he’s ever gotten busy with any of ’em…

*SCROLL DOWN FOR VIDEO* Howard Hewett tried his hardest to be polite about his experiences with groupies and such, but sometimes you just gotta tell it like it is…and that’s what he ultimately did. When asked whether or not he, as a newly engaged man, still gets tested by groupies, Howard (66), said ‘yes’ and that pretty much no environment is groupie-free for entertainers. He also said his fiancee’ understands.

Seeing him break down the differences between the Christian groupies sitting in the church and the R&B groupies bumpin’ n’ grindin’ at his shows was interesting I must admit. He also touched on pastors who fly high class on private jets and a few other topics, including if whether or not he, as a Christian man, breaks a very prominent Christian principle.

Marvin Gaye Jr.’s mother, Alberta, recounted the horrific final moments of her son’s life during an interview with local police:

“I was standing about eight feet away from Marvin, when my husband came to the door of the bedroom with his pistol,” she said. “My husband didn’t say anything, he just pointed the gun at Marvin. I screamed but it was very quick. He, my husband, shot – and Marvin screamed. I tried to run. Marvin slid down to the floor after the first shot.”

Approximately 20 minutes later, Marvin was rushed to the California Hospital Medical Center where he was pronounced dead on arrival just one day before his 45th birthday. Not only were fans shocked about his sudden death, but how he died also created a media firestorm.

Despite the horrific murder, Marvin Gaye Sr. only received a six-year suspended jail sentence for his son’s death. Although Marvin Sr. admitted to killing his son, there were aspects of the shooting that ultimately led to the judge’s ruling in his favor. In the months that followed, more details emerged surrounding the shooting that have been largely either overshadowed are not shared with the public at all…until now…*SCROLL DOWN FOR VIDEO*

Marvin Jr. and Sr. didn’t just have an argument, there’s other ‘proof ‘that Marvin Jr. was the aggressor?

It was brought out during the trial of Marvin Gaye Sr. that his son, Marvin Jr. reportedly charged at him and attacked him, delivering blows to his body and head. That alleged attack led to what Marvin Sr. had told his attorneys all along- that he had several injuries and bruises on his body as a result of Marvin Jr. being the aggressive force during the attack…

Ultimately Marvin Sr. took a plea of manslaughter. However, after the witness accounts, the details that were shown within the trial- including the the multiple injuries Marvin Sr. reportedly sustained during the final altercation with his son- along with the autopsy finding, which confirmed there were drugs in Marvin Jr.’s system at the time of his death, the judge did not even find cause to issue Marvin Sr. a sentence under his manslaughter plea. The judge instead allowed Marvin Gaye Sr. to walk free.

During an interview with the LA Times, the retired pastor, Marvin Gaye Sr., expressed remorse for shooting his son and also shared his side of the story. He also argued that his son abused cocaine, which was reportedly confirmed by the autopsy findings. ”I’m sorry and I regret what happened to this moment,” Marvin Gaye Sr. said in the interview, conducted in the Los Angeles County Jail. ”I do know I did fire the gun. I was just trying to keep him back off me.”

“If I could bring him back, I would. I was afraid of him. I thought I was going to get hurt. I didn’t know what was going to happen. I’m really sorry for everything that happened. I loved him. I wish he could step through this door right now. I’m paying the price now.” -Marvin Gaye Sr.

Throughout the trial several of Marvin Jr.’s siblings, as well as his mother were by his Pops, Marvin Sr.’s side during the trial and I always wondered why. Now, after watching this court footage, it helps to bring a bit more clarity to the matter and into their mindset at that time.

The rare court footage and detailed account of the murder trial does not negate the fact that Marvin Gaye Sr. should have clearly found another option to getting his son off of him, other than shooting than man. It’s an uptempo song; and in the video, Marvin III is dancing, singing, and fantasizing about hookin’ up with a woman he spotted at a restaurant (played by his wife). The fascination with Aaliyah didn’t start after her passing, but while she was still very young and mysterious. For years, most Guy fans have known about the on-again-off-again tension between members, Teddy Riley, Aaron Hall and Damon Hall…but we never knew the TRUE reason behind their breakup. In recent years, Teddy has now given the real reason in an interview with “The Breakfast Club.” And it all dates back to a very tragic incident that went down back in the day, involving New Edition.

The Deadly Tragedy That Led To Their Breakup

Teddy Riley: “Guy broke up because my best friend was killed. And the situation we had with New Edition in 1989…it started in North Carolina. It was a situation where New Edition walked on our stage while we were singing “Piece of My Love.” … We didn’t know what was going on.

So, when they walked on the stage we were just dumbfounded. All we heard was like, ‘Yo, don’t hold me back! Yo, what’s up Ted?!!’

Now, how that happened, [was] it started from there and it went to Pittsburgh.”

The tension between Guy and N.E. was never between the actual singers:

“It was never no actual beef with the principals, it was in the backline. One of my guys kicked their…tech guy 10 feet off the stage. … He did it because that particular day, New Edition was supposed to go on before us, but they were late.”

According to Teddy, promoter, Al Hayman; and label exec, Gene Griffin, decided which nights each group would alternate being the closing act:

“So that was the day that New Edition was supposed to go on first. When all this happened, it continued in Pittsburgh.”

By the time Guy arrived into Pittsburgh – hours after their crew –  Teddy was hit news that his best friend had just been shot FOUR times:

“When we drove into Pittsburgh, it was all on the news: ‘Guy by the name of Anthony B. from Harlem, NY, dies in the revolving door of the Marriott Hotel. And the guy that shot him was a pro because he didn’t miss, not one shot. […] “[Shot] four times through the heart, through the back. … It took him out right away.

And this guy, my best friend, he was my confidante, like, he did everything; he was the big homie. He was the one that kept me off the streets, after I got busted [for selling drugs back in the day]. … He was just my guy! … He just wanted to get outta the streets and I was the guy to help him,” Teddy said somberly. “He had groups, he wanted to get into the music business and I said ‘This is good, I’ll help you,’ because he helped me. With keyboards, if I needed something, he’d buy it and he wouldn’t even tell me, he’d just show up.”

“Nobody Came To The Funeral”

The final straw for Teddy was when “nobody” — including Aaron and Damon Hall — attended Anthony’s funeral.

“So, with someone like that I’d loss..I just said, ‘Ya know, no one cares, but I do.’ I went to the funeral, nobody came to the funeral.”

Teddy stated that his final decision to quit Guy transpired because when his best friend was murdered by N.E.’s crew, “they weren’t there for me.”

Michael Jackson Helped Teddy

Michael Jackson instantly sparked Teddy’s solo career:

“Michael Jackson called. … I asked Q-Tip if I could use his [studio] room to make music for Michael. I didn’t tell Michael I was quitting the group. We [Guy] had a show at the Madison Square Garden and that was my last show with Guy, 1990.”

Days later, Teddy flew to MJ’s location to create one the greatest musical masterpieces ever – MJ’s 1991 Dangerous album, which has sold over 32 million albums worldwide.

Reunited…

Guy’s breakup left a bad taste in Aaron Hall’s mouth, as he watched his former homie soar to new heights as a hit-making producer. Aaron’s disdain for Teddy Riley eventually spilled over into interviews and such. However, in recent years, Teddy, Damon, and Aaron reunited, letting bygones be bygones.

Remember comedian and actor, Mark Curry, from back in the day? Most of his mainstream fans know him as the star of the 90’s sitcom,  Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper. For those of us, Old Schoolers, who are 80’s hip hop fans, we also remember being first introduced to Curry, when he portrayed that hilarious ‘hater’ on Too Short’s 1989 hit, “I Ain’t Trippin.”

Mark Curry’s work created some great memories throughout the years, but behind the scenes, the brotha has gone THROUGH the fire and back. He endured a strange, frightening accident that left part of his body severely burned and has recently spoken about it. He also revealed which celebs helped him overcome his subsequent suicidal thoughts after the horrific ordeal.

During his VladTV interview, Curry was initially reluctant to discuss his accident, stating “that’s kinda blocked outta my life,” because it’s too painful of a memory. However, he did manage to give some details.

In 2006, 20% of Mark Curry’s body was severely burned while dong laundry at his home. Let him explain…

How Mark Curry’s Accident Happened…
In the video below, Curry explained that while doing his laundry at his residence, an aerosol can was behind the water heater, unbeknownst to Curry. The laundry machine was located near the water heater. The contents of the aerosol can, combined with the water heater’s temperature, etc, suddenly caused an explosion, throwing Curry across the room and ultimately landing him in the burn unit, in bad condition.

The Effects Of His Injuries…
Mark Curry was placed in a medically induced coma, after suffering massive burns on his back, side, and arm…

“I was in the St. Francis burn unit. I was in a coma for a while…and the Lord saved me…he saved me. It was just a [traumatic] event.”

Why Curry Contemplated Suicide…
After awaking from a 3-day coma, Curry explained why he wanted to kill himself, but in true comedic fashion, he still slipped a joke in to lighten the harsh reality of that time:

“It was a bad situation and it prompted me to go into a deep depression…and so, I don’t even deal with that. …and it changed my life.

I thought about suicide, but it’s hard to commit suicide when you’re 6’6” (LOL)…the ceiling’s right here. [So] I can’t hang myself. … It took me so low, into a black valley. People didn’t know what was wrong with me…

Celebrity Friends Helped Curry Get Through…

As Curry spent months in rehabilitation, recovering from his burn wounds, several of his celebrity homies and fellow comedians worked hard at helping him pull himself together emotionally and psychologically. They did so, by doing what they do best- finding the comedy behind the pain. He says they even jokingly compared him to Richard prior after Pryor’s infamous freebasing incident. It was a language Curry understood and still appreciates to this day:

“I’m in the hospital, [Bill] Cosby called me, making jokes. Damon Wayans called me, Chris Tucker [called]..all the comedians called me. All them muthaf**as joked on me,” Curry jokingly recalled.

His Biggest Surprises While In The Burn Unit…

Curry says his biggest surprise during his hospital stay, was his tremendous weight loss, which gave him a clear picture of the depth of his situation. He was typically 230 pounds, but says that because there are no mirrors in the burn unit, he had no idea he’d loss so much weight, until he attempted to wear regular clothes for the first time while there. He recalled, “The pants fell straight off…I started crying, like ‘What is going on?!!!'”

He also recalled taking a bath for the first time in a long while after being burned, which is usually extremely painful for still recovering burn victims…but for Curry, it was “like a baptism,” because he miraculously felt no pain.

These days, Mark Curry’s back to fulfilling his life’s passion as an actor and comedian. His story is a reminder of the old school saying: ‘What doesn’t kill you, only makes you stronger.’ Best wishes to the brotha.

Jamie Foxx is a helluva comedian, but according to him, what went down between he and former Death Row Records mogul, Suge Knight, one night at a nightclub, was NO joke. Well, Suge may have been laughing in the end, but Jamie said he was damn near doo-dooing on himself, literally…

FOXX: ‘SUGE TURNED ME INTO TEVIN CAMPBELL’

In the hilarious video clip below, Jamie Foxx recalled the incident between he and Suge on his “Foxxhole” satellite radio show. According to Jamie, someone inaccurately told Suge Knight that Jamie Foxx did not want him at a club event he was also attending. Suge was already standing outside the door, waiting to be let in though. So Suge was pissed, Jamie tried to sneak out of the back door and that’s when the story turned really funny, really fast (although I’m sure it wasn’t quite chuckle material at the time).

Jamie Foxx: “What happened was I was at the club and they wouldn’t let Suge in the club…and [there was a] lil’ White boy that was running the club. […] So somebody came and said ‘Suge outside,’ I said well tell him I said ‘Hello’…you know, I’m not a rapper (LOL). … So…they wouldn’t let him in the club and then they had him out there ’til 2 o’clock and then the White boy, T.K., tells Suge, ‘You can’t get in, ’cause Jamie Foxx said so!’ HE TOLD THE MOST NOTORIOUS GANGSTER OF THE 21st CENTURY THAT HE CAN’T GET IN”

“Now, look [at] how it looks- the big dude come in, tells me ‘Suge outside.’ …Then the babe comes in…you know how they give you the babe [and tell her] ‘Take this phone in.’ The they said ‘Suge on the phone’ and I’m like, ‘OH my goodness!’ You know, I just turned all the way into Tevin Campbell- *in his soft voice* ‘Oh my good ness, oh my God, I, I don’t know what to say…’ (LOL). I’m shocked, [so] I didn’t get on the phone.”

That’s when Jamie says he tried to make a quick escape plan:

JF: “I called my boy Che, I said ‘Che where you at?!!’ He said ‘I’m on the freeway, why?’ I said, ‘SUGE OUTSIDE!’I said ‘Dude you gotta come in and protect me SH*IIT!’ So he keeps going (LOl). I said, ‘Well, f**k it.’

So in my L.A. mind…I said [to myself] ‘Foxx, go out the back way. So I go out the back way and all of a sudden, Suge walks past the truck, but he don’t see me. .. [But] remember the old footage of Big Foot…when the mothaf***a starts *makes growling noises*? (laughs) I said ‘SH*IIT!’ I turned into Chris Tucker- *in his high pitched voice* ‘Hey man, lets get outta here, man!!!’

Here’s how Jamie attempted to settle the drama though:

JF: “So I had Johnny Mack (Jamie’s radio co-host) take the phone down to Suge. I give Johnny the ‘brave award.’ So, Suge gets on the phone… I said ‘Hello, Sugar…Mr. Suge’ (LOL). And [that] ni&&a said ‘F**K YOU NI&&A, IT AIN’T COOL NO MORE!!!'”

Jamie then yelled, “OH sh*t!” LOL. He also said it was at that moment he wanted to doo-doo on himself out of fear that Suge was about send his goons after him. Good thing that never happened though and both are still here with us today. Except, one of ’em is currently locked up and awaiting trial for killing a man in an incident he says was self defense. Guess we all know by now, which one that is.
