Decades after the ’90s cult classic film, “Boyz N’ The Hood,” hit theaters, late director legend, John Singleton, was still getting a kick outta the sweet revenge he got on N.W.A. rapper/Ruthless Records founder, Eazy-E at that time. However, before we get into what transpired between those two legends, can y’all believe it’s been 32 years since “Tre” yelled “RICKYYYYYY!!!” in that alley? Geesh…where’d the time go?!! Eazy E’s Rejection & Singleton’s Payback

John Singleton was only 23 years old and fresh outta college, when he directed the film…but he had a HUGE vision for it. In a prior interview with Vice, he revealed that when he’d written the “Boyz N’ The Hood” script, he wrote it specifically with the hopes that N.W.A.’s members would fill all of the significant roles.

Well, as y’all can see, Singleton only ended up with one former N.W.A. rapper in the film– Ice Cube. The rest of them declined, including the member John most wanted in it…Eazy-E. According to Singleton, Eazy dissed him…and this is what happened next:

Vice: Is it true you wanted the rest of NWA to be in the film as well?
John Singleton: They were supposed to be in it – that was my plan. The first time I met Eazy-E I said that I had this movie, but he wasn’t concerned about it.

V: Is that why you had the guy wearing the “We Want Eazy” shirt getting beat up in the film?
JS: Yeah. That was Ice Cube’s first day of production. I called him up and told him to bring all his NWA paraphernalia to the set. And then all of a sudden the crackhead walks out and his shirt says says, “We Want Eazy.” Cube laughs, and I say, “Y’all gonna whoop his a$$!” I did that – that was me!

Gotta love the smell of a lil’ comical revenge. Even though Eazy-E rejected Singleton, there may have been a good reason why he declined…

The year was 1991, when “Boyz N’ The Hood” film released — but by that time as most of us, Old Schoolers, recall — Eazy had other issues to deal with. In 1989, Ice Cube left N.W.A., so once ’91 rolled around, Cube was in a full fledged rap war with his former group members, MC Ren, Eazy E., Dr. Dre, and DJ Yella.

In 1990, NWA released their infamous Ice Cube diss track on their “100 Miles and Running” EP, in which they rapped: “We started with five, but yo / One couldn’t take it—So now it’s four / Cuz the fifth couldn’t make it.” They also called Cube “Benedict Arnold” on that EP.

By 1991, Ice Cube hit back at his the group on the diss track, “No Vaseline,” with these bars: “You lookin’ like straight bozos / I saw it comin’ that’s why I went solo / Kept on stompin’ / When y’all Muthafuc*as moved Straight outta Compton / You got jealous when I got my own company / But I’m a man, and ain’t nobody helpin’ me.”

In 1991, there were further issues for Eazy-E. That same year, the man responsible for NWA’s signature sound, Dr. Dre, left the group too, and launched Death Row Records with Suge Knight. Other N.W.A. members eventually left also, due to reported money conflicts with Eazy-E.

So…yeah, the early ’90s was NOT a good time for John Singleton to get a N.W.A. collabo’ for “Boyz N The Hood.” The idea was great though.

When iconic N.W.A. founder and rapper, Eazy-E , died in 1995, it wasn’t widely known exactly how many kids he’d produced. Fast forward to 27 years later and some are still confused about that. Some reports state he has 9 and his manager, Jerry Heller, claimed Eazy had 11 kids with 8 women.

Jada Pinkett-Smith has always been outspoken; quick to share her honest opinion on compelling topics she’s passionate about. So, when she had the opportunity to meet to Eazy-E, she had no reservations about voicing her disapproval of the NWA legend’s misogynistic lyrics. Months ago (pre-Will-Smith-Chris-Rock-slap era), Jada took to Instagram with a rare clip of the time she had the opportunity to confront Eazy. Of course, the then-upcoming actress had her guards up, but she was quite surprised to meet a man who was totally different from what she expected.

Meeting Eazy:

According to Essence magazine, Jada got straight down to business when she had a chance to talk to Eazy. “This is the day I met Eazy! We became the best of friends after this program,” Jada wrote. In the clip, she revealed how she’d planned to give Eazy a piece of her mind and explain why she couldn’t listen to his music. As a woman, Jada was brutally honest with Eazy admitting that she was highly offended by the rapper’s controversial lyrics. She even went a step further advising him of how he could positively use his platform to uplift women. “He, owning his own record company, can make a change within his community to uplift us,” a young Pinkett Smith continued. “When I listen to his music I want to feel good about myself, I want to feel good about my people, and I said ‘Eric, you have the power to do that.”

With the Instagram post, Jada admitted that encounter with Eazy actually changed everything. After speaking with him, she discovered there was much more to Eazy than what appeared on the surface. “I told him that before I met him today I would have thought he was a woman hater because of his music that he writes.”

Eazy’s Response:

When the talk show host asked Eazy if he was willing to take Jada’s advice, he seemed to agree with her to a certain extent. “Eric, are you going to do that? Will this change? Does this change the way you think about the music and the way you write?” the talk show host asked. Eazy-E responded, “Yes. To a certain point.” The host continued, “You got now, a young sista here in your face, in your face who is saying I wanna see a change. I want to know what you can do about it?” Making an effort to defend himself, Eazy said, “I do say nice things about sistas.”

Not one to back down, Jada chimed in again. “To me!!” she said in reference to his statement about saying “nice things.” She continued, “But you got a song on the record, me being a young sista, I told Eric, ‘I cannot listen to your music and feel good about myself, now come on.”’

NWA’s Impact On Rap:

Back in the day, NWA quickly rose to fame with their unique brand of hip-hop. Unlike other rap groups who rapped about parties, dancin’, clothes, sneakers, and crushin’ on girls, NWA had a different approach to the rap game focusing on the harsh realities of life in the hood, police brutality, race relations, and other controversial topics. But they didn’t stop there.

When it came to rapping about women, the guys had highly explicit references to women, and their lyrics led to heightened criticism. NWA opened the door for rappers with similar, explicit lyrical content. Although they sold millions of records, that didn’t stop the criticism. Like Jada Pinkett-Smith, lots of women weren’t pleased at all. Props to the then-up-and-coming-actress, Jada, for speakin’ her mind. Remember when the N.W.A. biopic, Straight Outta Compton, hit the big screen in 2015? The film was produced by Eazy E.’s widow, Tomica Wright, and it’s clearly a movie that Eazy’s daughter will never forget…and apparently her Moms neither.

The legendary N.W.A./Ruthless Records founder, Eazy E (real name Eric Wright, Sr.), was the father of nine children when he passed away at age 30 from A.I.D.S.. His first-born child, rapper and “Growing Up Hip Hop” reality TV star, Eric Wright, Jr. a.k.a. Lil Eazy E, was 11 years old at the time of his pops’ passing. Eazy-E was a newlywed…having married his wife, Tomica Woods-Wright twelve days before he died. Fast forward a few decades later…and it’s apparent that Eazy’s widow and his first-born baby weren’t too fond of the decisions either of them were making regarding Eazy’s finances and likeness at that time. However, they eventually agreed to amicably settle their legal dispute.

When Eazy E died, he left Tomica in control of Ruthless Records and the rest of his business affairs, presumably because all of his children were minors at the time. That is also what caused many problems between Tomica and Eric Jr.. It was a long, grueling battle between Eric Jr. and Tomica. It started in 2017, when Tomica hit Eric Jr. with a lawsuit and he countersued her.

Why Widow Sued Lil’ Eazy E.

Tomica sued Eric “Lil Eazy E” Wright Jr. for illegally using the trademarks for his father’s Ruthless Records and N.W.A. brands:

Via The Wrap: According to the suit, Tomica Woods-Wright’s company, Comptown Records, took over ownership of Eazy-E’s label Ruthless Records after the rapper’s death in 1995, and has “continuously used the trade names, trademarks, and service marks RUTHLESS, RUTHLESS RECORDS, and N.W.A. “

However, the suit contends, [in] July [2017] Arnold E. White, an associate of Eazy-E’s son Eric Darnell Wright, formed a corporation in California called Ruthless Records, and both Wright and White filed a trademark application for Ruthless Records Inc., which was subsequently rejected because ” the mark is confusingly similar with the RUTHLESS and RUTHLESS RECORDS marks owned by Ruthless.”

Why Lil Eazy E Countersued Dad’s Widow

Here is why Eric Jr. countersued Tomica soon after her initial lawsuit:

Via TheWrap: Eazy-E’s son calls B.S. on those claims, saying that Comptown gave up the right to those marks through abandonment, and in any case Comptown’s application for the marks was marred by false claims.

“Upon information and belief, Plaintiff made false and material representations with the intent to deceive the United States Trademark Office,” Wright’s counterclaim. … In his answer to the complaint, Wright also accuses Comptown of “fraudulent activity prior to obtaining the registrations” for the marks.

Their Settlement

By August 2018, Lil Eazy E and Tomica settled their legal dispute..but Eric “lil Eazy E’ Wright Jr. ended up with the short end of the stick:

Via The Blast– Eazy-E‘s widow and son have settled their nasty legal battle over the use of the N.W.A. name, with Eazy’s son coming out on the losing end. According to court documents obtained by The Blast, Tomica Woods-Wright and Eric Wright reached a settlement that will end the contentious case.

Per their agreement, Eazy’s son agreed to a permanent injunction prohibiting him from using the names “Straight Outta Compton,” “N.W.A.” and “Ruthless.” The deal states he agrees it will only confuse fans if he continues trying to use the marks.The rapper’s widow is allowing him to use the mark “Rich & Ruthless.”

According to the papers, as part of the settlement, the defendants have been blocked from using Ruthless and Ruthless Records, N.W.A, Comptown, Comptown Records and Straight Outta Compton.

The courts had to respect the decision Eazy E made when he left his wife in control of all his business affairs and trademarks. However, as the son of a legend it’s gotta sting Lil’ Eazy E to know he can’t personally use the name and likeness his own father created.

But for the record, Lil Eazy E says he’s still grateful to Tomica for financially helping he and his family throughout the years, as he grew into adulthood. All’s well that ends well.

NWA’s Impact On Rap:

Back in the day, NWA quickly rose to fame with their unique brand of hip-hop. Unlike other rap groups who rapped about parties, dancin’, clothes, sneakers, and crushin’ on girls, NWA had a different approach to the rap game focusing on the harsh realities of life in the hood, police brutality, race relations, and other controversial topics. But they didn’t stop there.

When it came to rappin’ about women, the guys had highly explicit references to women, and their lyrics led to heightened criticism. NWA opened the door for rappers with similar, explicit lyrical content. Although they sold millions of records, that didn’t stop the criticism. Like Jada Pinkett-Smith, lots of women weren’t pleased at all. Props to the then-up-and-coming-actress, Jada, for speakin’ her mind.

AJ Johnson On Why Suge Reportedly Wanted To Shoot Him

First let’s get into his past beef with Suge Knight and how it all started over an Eazy E music video.

AJ Johnson: “Dr. Dre [Suge’s then Death Row Records partner] put me in his video as ‘Sleazy E’ (a mockery of Dre’s former NWA group member-turned rival, Eazy E).

AJ says that when Dre approached him about doing the “Dre Day” video, he (A.J.) was actually cool with Eazy:

“Me and Eazy were cool. It’s a funny story. [..] So I did the video and I guess Eazy [had] seen it. Eazy called me and he was like, ‘Man, you know everybody thought that was me in the video.'”

Then came the odd turn of events, Eazy wanted AJ to then play him in his clap-back diss to Dre and Death Row Records:

“He [Eazy E] was like, ‘Now you gotta do my video, to show people that wasn’t me!’ I was like, ‘No problem!’ So now I go do Eazy’s video.”

“Suge Knight gets word that I’m doing Eazy’s video. He called me into his office. [At that time] we’d just done half the video, so I had to go back tomorrow to finish it. But Suge called me into the office…[he was] like, ‘Man you can’t finish that video.’ I’m like, ‘I dont have nothing against Dre, I don’t have nothing against Eazy, I’m a comedian, I’m tryna pay my rent.'”

AJ says Suge still was telling him ‘You can’t do it,’ despite the fact that he’d just explained he needed the money to take care of his business.

“I’m like, ‘What you mean I can’t do it? He already paid me.'”

Then this happened:

“Suge pulled a gun out *AJ signals a hand motion, as if he’s slamming a gun on a desk*…’I said you can’t do it’ [said Suge].”

“Alright I won’t do it.”

I went and told Eazy, I said ‘Man I can’t finish the video.’ He was like, ‘Why?’ I [said] ‘Suge told me I can’t do it.'”

After AJ admitted, to Eazy, why he was backing out of the video, he said Eazy was like, “C’mon man, you gon’ let that ni&&a punk you like that?‘ However, AJ feared for his life at that point and felt like it just wasn’t worth the risk. Therefore they came up with a solution:

AJ told Eazy, “‘I know somebody that can finish the video.'” He continued, “[Comedian] Arnez J. finished the video…HE played Eazy, LOL. So in the first half it’s me and in the second half, it’s Arnez J, LOL. […] So the money that Eazy gave to me, I had to give to Arnez J.”

Why Fans Caught Off Guard By A.J.’s Appearance

Now, remember we mentioned that there was something even more alarming than the life-threatening revelation AJ exposed? Well, that would be the real-life struggle AJ appears to have been be dealing with at the time of his interview.

As fans watched A.J. tell his story, ironically he was very coherent, yet many wondered if he was battling an alcohol addiction, a substance addiction, or a combination of all of the above. Peep his interview clip up top to see what else he revealed, and see if y’all notice anything different.

When iconic N.W.A. founder and rapper, Eazy E, died in 1995, it wasn’t widely known exactly how many kids he’d produced. Fast forward nearly 26 years later and some are still confused about that. Some reports state he has 9 and his manager, Jerry Heller, claimed Eazy had 11 kids with 8 women.

Eazy E’s Daughter…

Despite the confusion, one such offspring of Eazy’s is pretty well known- his 28 year old rapper daughter, Erin “Ebie” Wright (pictured below), who as we recently reported, was just 3 and 1/2 when Eazy passed away.

Now, here’s the thing, we’ve already covered Ebie’s story, here on ILOSM. We’ve even shared how much she’s inherited her Pops’ outspokenness, which was evident in her public disdain for his widow, Tomica Wright (we’ll explain that in a minute). But most Eazy E fans had no idea Ebie’s mother is a banger, who’s making these youngins shout, “Heeeeeeyyy Ms. Parker,” every time they see her.

In addition to be fine and fly, Ebie’s moms is helping her defend Eazy’s legacy from the alleged destruction that has been done to it by his wife…which, we’ll also explain in a sec,’ but first…

Ebie And Mother Plan To Tell Eazy E’s ‘Full’ Story…
On Father’s Day 2020, Ebie shared a throwback photo (below) of herself as an infant with her parents, Tracy and Eazy E, vowing to  share their “full” story. Ebie is referring to her planned documentary about Eazy’s life that she and her Mother say will tell the whole truth about him:

“Happy Father’s Day to my dad (R.I.P. 👼🏽) AND to the greatest person he could’ve possibly left me on this earth with @tracyjernagin 💐. It’s impossible to completely fill both shoes but goodness have you done the most wonderful job trying to do so every single day of my life . My everything’s .. the two who made me … the realest of all ! ❤️❤️❤️ #BuiltDifferent …… oh and the documentary is still coming 😎🤞🏼. Our story will be told . Production was just effected by corona/covid as was everything else in the world . Soon come 🖤 .”
