Actress Paula Jai Parker, best known for her roles in “Friday”, “Hustle & Flow,” and the animated series, “The Proud Family,” is highly pissed after receiving her recent earnings from SAG. So was comedian/actress, Luenell, who also revealed her SAG earnings. And quite frankly, after seeing just how much — or rather, how little — they earned, we definitely understand where they’re coming from.

Paula Jai Parker And Luenell Blast SAG Over Minuscule Check

A few weeks ago, Paula decided to share with the world exactly how tiny her weekly SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Film Artists) checks are, and tiny is damn near an understatement, unfortunately. Matter of fact, you know the saying that ‘it must make dollars and sense’? Well, when it comes to Paula’s check, it apparently skipped clean over the ‘dollars’ part and jumped straight to ‘cents’…literally.

“The Hustle and Flow” and “Friday” veteran revealed that she got paid a whopping $0.78 cents! Nah, that is not a typo folks. She really received a $0.78 check from SAG-AFTRA, via Bank of America…and to prove it, she shared a pic of her check on social media. In doing so, she also, shared how she felt about it:

As you noticed, Paula mentioned that she was a recent NAACP nominee, which she’d just shared news of online shortly before receiving her tiny check from SAG-AFTRA. The reason she’s nominated is because homegirl is still out here doin’ the damn thing in the acting game…she’s just not getting her just-due when it comes to her pocketbook…at least not from SAG-AFTRA, that is. However, the popular animated series Paula does voice-over work for, “The Proud Family: Louder And Prouder,” was nominated for two 2024 NAACP Awards.

For what it’s worth, it must of at least been comforting for Paula to know she is not alone in her SAG-check struggle. After she took to social media to vent about her SAG-AFTRA check, comedian/actress, Luenell, commented underneath Paul’s post to let her now they are both in the same struggle, writing:

“See Paula, I already made a post like this … was about 15 checks that added up to about $96.00🤔”-Luenell

Wow. So, as we all can see from Luenell’s and Paula’s transparency… two things are abundantly clear– fame does not always equate to dollars; and in Hollywood it’s no secret that oftentimes Black actresses unfortunately get far less respect in the game.

Late actor/comedian, John Witherspoon, kinda surprised us when he revealed how much, or rather, how little he actually made from his role on the “Friday” films. Let’s just say, he started from the bottom.

In a 2018 interview with Vlad TV, Witherspoon said that for the first “Friday” movie – a film that grossed $30 million at the box office, but only cost $3 million to produce – he earned a big fat check for $5,000! Yep, you read that correctly – Witherspoon said he earned a whopping $5 G’s – and according to Witherspoon, so did the rest of the “Friday” cast:

“We got paid five thousand dollars a piece to do that movie. … Everybody else on that show, they gon’ say they made more money, but ain’t nobody made no money on that,” said Witherspoon.

John Witherspoon’s anorexic-like “Friday” check was surprising, but we’ve gotta keep in mind that this was a new film and folks probably didn’t know how big it would end up becoming. So, maybe Ice Cube and New Line Cinema had to penny pinch on that particular “Friday” budget.

But Then This Happened…

Then the big payday came for Witherspoon…after the second “Friday” rolled around, John said he earned $100,000. Now that was more like it. And of course the checks only got better once the third “Friday” installment was being filmed…and Witherspoon ultimately was able to sing, “Well we’re movin’ on up, to the east si-i-ide…” when he got paid close to $1 million for that one.

Is A ‘Friday Part 4’ Still In The Works?

As far as a ‘Friday #4,’ there’s been much speculation, for several years, that one would soon be in the works. But for the longest time, it didn’t seem as if that would ever happen. Many fans also assumed Chris Tucker would return to the “Friday” franchise for his “Smokey” role, but unfortunately we will never see a new scene from the “Smokey” character again, according to the late John Witherspoon.

Witherspoon cleared those Tucker rumors up a few years ago, stating that after Warner Brothers bought out New Line Cinema, they do not want to do a “Friday pt. 4,” UNLESS Chris Tucker signs the deal. However, according to Witherspoon, Chris Tucker was like ‘Hell naw, I’m not doing it.’

Apparently by 2018,Ice Cube, Witherspoon, and Mike Epps were cookin’ up something at that time, because a photo and video surfaced online of what appeared to show them filming on the set of a new “Friday.” However, it’s unclear if they were able to finish filming the alleged ‘Friday pt. 4’ film prior to John Witherspoon’s untimely passing from a heart attack on October 19, 2019. Only time will tell.

May “Friday” film legends, John Witherspoon; Tommy “Tiny” Lister (“Deebo”; died December 20, 2020); and A.J. Johnson (“Ezal”; died September 6, 2021), continue to rest in peace and power.

We have heartbreaking news to share I Love Old School Music family … comedian and actor, AJ Johnson, has passed away at the young age of 55. Most of us are familiar with A.J. from his infamous roles in cult classic films like, “I Got The Hook Up,” and “Friday. He brought so many laughs to us — both on the big screen and on stage in stand-up comedy.

Though the details of A.J.’s passing are sketchy, his nephew, as well as his rep’ spoke out to share what is known of A.J. Johnson’s death thus far:

Via TMZ – Johnson’s nephew tells us … A.J. was found lifeless in a store earlier this month in Los Angeles and rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. So far, no cause of death has been released. …

Johnson’s rep tells TMZ … “Our BH Talent family is saddened about the loss of an amazing iconic legend in comedy, our client and friend Anthony “AJ” Johnson.”

The rep adds … “We are praying for all those that were touched by his comedy, acting, but most of all his life. We are especially praying for his beloved Wife, Children, Siblings and Manager.”

A.J. Johnson was rumored to have been prepping to rekindle his role as “EZE” in the upcoming “Last Friday” sequel, but that has yet to be officially confirmed. “Friday” franchise creator, rap legend Ice Cube, took to Twitter to pay homage to A.J. Johnson after news begin spreading regarding his untimely passing:

Throughout his career, A.J. Johnson has appeared in 50+ films and television shows, such as “The Player’s Club, “Moesha,” “Martin,” “Lethal Weapon 3,” “Menace II Society,” “House Party,” and more. And his portrayal of Eazy-E in Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg’s 1993 “Dre Day” music video was epic.

A.J.’s passing has rocked the entertainment industry just two weeks after “The Wire” actor, Michael K. Wright, passed away from a suspected drug overdose. May both of those kings rest in peace and power.

First Came “Mrs. Parker” & Their Daughter

“Ms. Parker” was once ‘Mrs. Overton.’ Kathleen Bradley and Bill Overton jumped the broom in 1980, but headed to divorce court by 1984. Even though their wedded bliss was brief, they did produce a blissful moment- the birth of their beautiful daughter, Cheyenne Overton. She’s the eldest of the Overton girls:

Terrence and Kathleen also have one son together and Terrence has a daughter from a prior relationship.

Then Came Wife, Jayne Kennedy, & Their 3 Daughters

Jayne Kennedy and Bill Overton both went through divorces around the same time. Many of us, Old Schoolers, remember Jayne’s infamous 12 year marriage to actor, Leon Isaac Kennedy, which ended in 1982 – a few years prior to their controversial sex tape scandal.

Three years after officially divorcing Leon, Jayne and Bill fell in love and married in 1985. They’ve actually managed to do what many Hollywood couples have not- they stayed married and are STILL married 33 years later!

Just when you thought these two happy love stories couldn’t get any better, there’s more. Not only were Jayne and Kathleen blessed with wonderful children, they are homegirls! Here’s one of the most recent photos of the two of them celebrating Jayne’s daughter, Savannah Re, at her bridal shower:

By the way, when it comes to Bill, he definitely has a type. The similarities between Jayne and Kathleen exceed beyond their timeless beauty.  Both of the ladies are former beauty queens, they’re both from Ohio, and they’re both actresses.
