The exploitation took place when Stevie was working with Rufus ft. Chaka Khan, on their 1974 album, “Rags To Rufus.” Both Chaka and Stevie wrote some of the songs on the album and apparently Chaka gave up a LOT of bread that she could have earned for being a co-writer on their biggest hit song from that album, “Tell Me Something Good.” But that is where she says she got exploited by Stevie. Here is what Chaka detailed about that in her book:

“Next thing I know, I was working with Stevie Wonder on the lyrics for “Tell Me Something Good.” And because I was jazzed about having Wonder on our album, I forfeited a co-write credit. A lot of people can’t believe that. They ask me if I’m bitter. Did I feel exploited? If I had been able to predict that song would be a smash, would I have done things differently? No, I’m not bitter. In a way, I was exploited but that happens to everybody no matter what field he or she is in.”

Chaka has a great outlook about the millions of dollars she gave up, many people would have still been holding a grudge against Stevie 40-plus years later. But the truth of the matter is business is business, so Stevie wasn’t really at fault, because it was up to Chaka to have the knowledge, or at least a knowledgeable team around her to advise her to do otherwise.

“The Rags To Rufus” album earned Rufus ft. Chaka Khan their very first Grammy Award and it sold over a million copies at the time of it’s release. Who knows how much it’s earned by now- with all of the movies, commercials, and additional albums it’s sold.

We can’t really blame Chaka for not being bitter, because if it weren’t for the success of “Tell Me Something Good,” which Stevie added his flavor to, then Rufus may not have blown up at the time that they did and Chaka might not have become the Chaka we know her to be today. So Chaka’s amateur decision was actually like a blessing in disguise.

They Reportedly Grew Apart After Alleged Family Friction

Renee Hardaway was the Lula Mae Hardaway’s six children- Stevie Wonder, Larry, Milton, Renee, and Calvin.

Stevie and Renee seemingly once had a very close relationship. Renee even co-wrote some timeless hit songs with Stevie. But in the years that followed, there was alleged distance between them.

Sadly, Renee’s son eventually had a major dispute with Stevie (we’ll explain in a minute). It’s unclear if that is the reason Stevie and his sis’ reportedly grew apart though.

Stevie’s Sister Was Found ‘Almost Unrecognizable’

It was determined that Stevie’s sister, Renee, passed away on May 13, 2018, at age 56. She seemingly died alone and wasn’t discovered until much later.

According to reports, family members discovered Renee’s body inside her home, but she was allegedly so badly decomposed by that time, that she was ‘almost unrecognizable.’

Stevie cooperated in the sting with cops, to capture his nephew and his nephew’s girlfriend,Tamara Eileen Diaz. But he eventually got caught.

Stevie & His Current Wife

As we previously reported, Stevie and his current wife, Tomeeka Bracy (46), began dating back in 2012, shortly after Wonder and Kai Millard Morris separated.  Stevie and Tomeeka have two kids together, and they officially said “I do” in 2017 during a private, plush ceremony at Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles, CA.

Their wedding stirred up a lotta hype in the press, because the Mr. and Mrs. reportedly took great lengths to keep it on the hush. According to reports, their 160 guests had to sign a $1 million confidentiality agreement, which prohibited them from sharing photos and video with the public. Stevie Wonder’s kids range in age from 7 to 47 (yep, Stevie was -and likely still is- a busy dude) and according to People Magazine, all nine children participated in Stevie’s and Tomeeka’s wedding.

Overall, Stevie Wonder is close to all of his children and clearly has long ago made the decision that no matter how demanding his career is, he will always see to it that his kids are his top priority.

Stevie, 71, is currently in a committed marriage with his wife, Tomeeka Bracy, 47 (pictured below), who gave birth to Stevie’s ninth child in December 2014, so we’re assuming he’s hung up his playa hat. According to Page Six, just because Stevie is without sight, does not mean he needs help to determine which lady is the one for him. When they asked Stevie’s friends how he pulled his current girlfriend Tomeeka, this was their reply:

“Like he does with all of the other women, they were at the same gathering and he smelled the kind of perfume she was wearing, she walked past him and he said she seemed light on her feet so she must be a pretty lady,” the source said.

“He’d change the words and insert my name and his name in there and he’d even talk about what he thought would be good baby names and how he’d buy the most fabulous of houses and how he knew I could help him to take care of himself and do his heart right,” she said. “So, naturally, it wasn’t hard to fall for.”

Their Controversial Pregnancy, Marriage & History

Siberstein, Gordy, and Ross have an interesting history together that’s deserving of a side eye and a ‘Say what now?!!’ You see…Diana dated Berry Gordy for many years and became pregnant with their daughter, Rhonda Ross, in January 1971. Two months later, in March 1971, Diana married Robert Silberstein (yep, you read that right). Silberstein and Ross have two children together: Chudney Ross and actress, Tracee Ellis Ross. Robert Silberstein is also Rhonda’s ‘legal’ father and raised her as his own, even though Gordy is her biological dad, which she revealed she was eventually told at age 13. Diana later remarried and had two more sons, Evan Ross and Ross Naess.

One could assume that Diana’s, Berry’s and Robert’s interesting history may, or may not, have had something to do with the frustration Robert Silberstein vented about in a vintage interview at the time of his and Diana’s divorce. People Magazine reported that he had a problem with Gordy, he threw shade at Motown’s Stevie Wonder, and blamed Motown Records for his and Diana’s divorce back in the day. To this day, Robert has an extremely close bond with his ‘daughter,’ Rhonda, as well as his biological daughters, Tracee and Chudney.

Stevie Wonder’s mother, Lula Mae Hardaway, once revealed that she was forced by Stevie’s father to sadly exploit herself in a way that she NEVER thought she would. Lula Mae collaborated with authors, Dennis Love and Stacy Brown, who wrote her authorized biography, “Blind Faith: The Miraculous Journey of Lula Hardaway, Stevie Wonder’s Mother” in order to share her story with the world. The following excerpts are heart breaking, but are also a testament to just how strong Ms. Hardaway really was.

The Unfortunate Situation Lula Had To Endure:

In her book, Lula Mae Hardaway and her co-authors, revealed that her husband, Calvin Judkins (Stevie Wonder’s dad), forced her into prostitution and became her pimp, when their children were young. See the horrific details from her book below:

Lula Hardaway, her husband (Judkins) and their sons (including Stevie) were getting low on food and coal. One evening, her husband, who was drunk, told her, “I want you to go take a ride with a man, he gave me some money, he’s waiting in his car on the street. Be nice to him.” Lula asked, “Be nice to him…what do you mean? Judkins said, “You just do whatever he wants you to do!”

Lula screamed, “Are you crazy drunk-Judkins grabbed her arm and wrenched it, hard. Lula feared it might snap in two. He had her pinned up against the wall and spit the following words in her ear: “You go out there and do what he says or I’ll beat you like you never been beat. You know I will!”

He shoved her roughly away from the wall. “Get your coat and get out of here!” In a daze, Lula collected her overcoat and shrugged it on. One of her son’s appeared in the kitchen doorway: Where you going, Mama? I’m hungry.

“I’ll be back in a little while, she heard herself say. You stay here. Mama will be back in a bit.”

She walked down the stairs where the sedan was idled by the curb. She opened the door and got in. Afterwards, when it was over, she returned home and walked up the stairs shell shocked.

Later that evening, she went to the corner market and bought a chicken for dinner because, by God, her children were going to have food in their stomachs that night and they were going to be warm. She would see to it.

Other times, she refused to go out on “the stroll” but she would always be under the threat of Judkin’s insistence. She was under his sway and she hated it, resented it, felt revolted by it. But she was convinced that this was the only way, for now, until he got back on his feet, until he figured things out. Sometimes, Judkins would bring home men for her. Other times, she was on her own and she would walk to the stroll, now she understood why some of the girls took dope but she never did.

Once…a large man [told her] ‘This is my street…so, bi*^h, why you here?’ Lula stood her ground. ‘I’m here, she said, her voice wavering slightly, because my children are hungry and I want some coal in the stove tonight when I go home..so why don’t you just tell me where your street ends? And I’ll make sure I stay off it.’  -via PanacheR

Stevie cherished his Mother and eventually was able to take excellent care of her for the rest of her life, so she would never have to compromise her body, nor her dignity again. Lula Mae Hardaway was in a tough situation, but this is a hardcore example of what a mother would do to provide for her family, when she feels helpless and hopeless. A mother will make sure her children eat by ANY means necessary, sometimes even if it means her pride and her well being. We salute Ms. Hardaway for her willingness to share her struggle with the world and hopefully her story has helped another mother out there to keep her head up, even when it seems there isn’t much hope left.

After Stevie’s mother sadly passed away on July 6, 2008, Stevie’s lyrics to his song loudly rang true when he said “Don’t you worry ’bout a thing, don’t you worry ’bout a thing pretty Mama, cause I’ll be standing in the wings when you check it out.” Rest well Lula Mae Hardaway…job well done.

True Old Schoolers remember actor, Ernest Harden Jr.,from his roles in various sitcoms and films back in the day, including “The Jeffersons,” the film “White Men Can’t Jump,” and many more. One of his most memorable roles was his guest appearance on “Good Times,” as J.J.’s art student, “Earl.” Remember that? That was the episode where “J.J.” decided to give art classes in their home in order to raise some extra money and “Earl’s” dad threatened to beat “Earl” to an oblivion for attending the classes.

Well, fast forward to decades later, and Ernest Harden Jr. dropped a bombshell revelation about his friends, Stevie Wonder and actress, Akosua Busia,  that most of us would not have expected.

The Details Revealed…

In an interview with Actors Entertainment (see video below, starts at 5:03 mark), Ernest revealed that his good friend/actress, Akosua Busia a.k.a. “Nettie” from “The Color Purple,” was in a serious relationship with Stevie Wonder back in the day. In fact, Ernest — a Detroit, MI native — says that’s how he became good friends with fellow Detroit native, Stevie.

They eventually became so cool, that Stevie would call him at 3 a.m.. sometimes. Why? Because Ernest explained that because Stevie is blind, he doesn’t necessarily have a concept of night and day, so whenever he’s up, he simply calls friends, or do what one may do at 12 noon, even if it’s the wee hours of the morning. Back to this whole “Nettie- Stevie coupled up thing though…

Now, remember we said the signs were there all along? Well, we’ve seen Stevie and Akosua out at red carpet events together, but the vibe they’d always given off was one of mentor and mentee. Matter of fact, as we previously reported, Stevie is the godparent of Akosua’s and the late director, John Singleton’s, now-24-year-old daughter, Hadar Busia-Singleton.

In addition to Stevie and Akosua frontin’ for the cameras back in the day (I joke…I joke, I kid I kid…but it’s still true), Stevie is still very close to the “Color Purple” star and Hadar. As we also reported, Akosua co-wrote the song, “Moon Blue,” with Stevie Wonder, for his album, “A Time 2 Love.”

Akosua also oftentimes pays homage to the music genius as the “god-daddy’ of her beautiful daughter. For example, for Stevie’s 70th birthday, Akosua paid tribute with the following photo and caption:

In 2012, Alpha L. Walker, who was reported by Billboard as Stevie Wonder’s ‘cousin,’ as well as Alpha’s girlfriend, Tamara E. Diaz, ended up serving jail time, after being busted in a sting operation that brought down their reported extortion attempt.

The Vindictive Video Footage Against Stevie
According to Billboard, Alpha L. Walker told Stevie’s attorney that they were about to ‘sell a film ranting against the singer’s treatment of his family for millions of dollars.’ The film painted Stevie as a heartless family member, who cares nothing about how his family is living:

A police detective described the film as an 80-minute rant against Wonder. Portions of it were filmed in the former home of the singer’s late mother, which is now dilapidated, and it also shows Wonder’s son, who the musician is protective of. Walker, 38, accused the musician of being “a slumlord” and made derogatory comments about the singer’s mother, two witnesses said. …

“It was a continuous rant about the injustices that had been done to him – in his opinion – by Mr. Morris and that Mr. Morris was the cause of him having all of these issues in his life,” Los Angeles Police Detective Tracey Benjamin testified.

More Claims Involving Stevie’s Son
The film also made claims about Stevie’s son, who reportedly has learning disabilities. Additionally, Alpha’s video footage showed Stevie’s late Mother’s now dilapidated home. To add insult to injury, the film also made claims that Stevie, “possibly engaged in an incestuous relationship,” according to Stevie’s attorney.

Stevie Wonder’s Reaction To The Claims
Stevie was deeply hurt by the accusations being made in the extortion plot and film, according to Detective Benjamin:

Benjamin, who interviewed Wonder for the case, said the singer was hurt by Walker’s accusations and said they were untrue. She said Wonder stated that paying his cousin money would be the only way to keep it from being sold to a news outlet and embarrassing him and his family.

“He explained that when something like this is released to the media, it is presumed to be true,” Benjamin said.

Stevie’s attorney, William Briggs II also state that although Stevie watched most of the film at that time, he could not go any further, once footage of his son- who has mental disabilities- was shown.

The Extortion Plot & Bust
According to reports, Stevie’s cousin initially told Stevie’s team that he wanted $5 million for the video footage, but after Briggs informed Alpha that Stevie was pissed over the demand and the allegations, Alpha settled for a cool $500K.

Unbeknownst to Alpha Walker and his girlfriend, Tamara Diaz, they were about to be busted during the meet-up to get the money from Stevie’s attorney, Briggs:

Via Billboard– Walker repeatedly told Briggs that he wasn’t intending to extort Wonder and asked for the lawyer’s assurances that he wasn’t committing a crime. The attorney said a confidentiality agreement he drafted included language that the pair should seek legal advice.

With more than two dozen officers monitoring the hamburger restaurant where the group held their final meeting, Walker and Diaz signed their initials on the agreement and were quickly arrested.

Alpha L. Walker and Tamera Diaz were arrested on May 12, 2012, and later sentenced to 292 days in jail, after pleading no contest to the extortion plot. Additionally, they both received probation, during which Alpha was required to attend bi-weekly mental health counseling; while Tamera had to complete 78 Narcotics Anonymous classes. They were also ordered to stay the hell away from Stevie, his family, and co-workers at that time.

Like we said…blood ain’t always thicker than water.
