L.A. Reid & Babyface Drama Led To Tevin Campbell Taking Usher’s Songs

It turns out “Can We Talk” was originally Usher’s song…until Babyface gave it away to Tevin Campbell in order to spite LA Reid at that time, according to Usher:

Usher: “When I first signed to LaFace Records, I wanted to do an album with Babyface and LA Reid, right? I signed specifically for that reason. So LA Reid wanted Babyface to work on me…and they were going through, you know, a lot of drama at the time. They were kinda severing their ties. He [Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds] got mad…and he built an entire album for me, and he gave the whole album to somebody else…Tevin Campbell! ‘Can We Talk’…was my song…”

“Can We Talk” ended up being the biggest song of Tevin’s career. It stayed at #1 on the R&B charts for weeks and the entire album, I.m Ready, sold 2 million+ albums. By the way, I dig Usher and Tevin, but I gotta admit that after the way Tevin killed it on “Can We Talk,” I couldn’t imagine ANY other singer recording that song…not even Usher.

Issues With His Momager vs. His Mother

Usher’s mother was his manager for years, until he fired her. But he acknowledges his gratitude for her…

Usher: “I’m a grown man in theory because I’ve always been the man of the house…I’ve elected to be the provider of the family even though my mother is the protector…she crippled me a little bit for a minute because my focus wasn’t, had nothing to do with business. Can we talk?!? Tevin Campbell hasn’t been very visible in the past decade, just popping up here and there. Ironically, he did an interview in 2003, with Sister 2 Sister Magazine, where he admitted to having a “Try-Sexual” attitude towards sex…and after that interview, his fans didn’t hear much from him. A wise person once said ‘living in your truth is good food for the soul.’ Well, we’ll be damned if Tevin didn’t make sure his soul had the breakfast, lunch, and full course dinner, when he publicly dropped his sexual revelation on his fans. Back in 2003, Tevin’s interview with Jamie Foster Brown had everyone talking. This was “Pre-Social Media,” but the effects of the interview have been long lasting. “Try-sexual,” as Tevin explained, is the best way to describe who he is. Below is an excerpt from Sister 2 Sister Magazine:

Jaime: You don’t want them to know what your sexuality is?

Tevin: I’m not gay, but there are a lot of different things that I do like, sexually. Being in the business, you are introduced to a lot of different things. I’m not gay, but I’m a freak and I think a lot of people know what a freak is.

When asked by SoulTrain.com if he would discuss his personal life, or if it deters him from wanting to be more open, Tevin said…

“I always say that I have to live my life for me. Everyone has to go home at night and live behind closed doors. No matter what you think you know about a celebrity and what they are doing, you truly don’t know. Everybody lives behind closed doors… As far as what I do in my personal life, if you get to know me then you’ll know. But I have friends and family that love me for who and what I am. I don’t need other people to love me for who I am, I need them to love me for my music and if they can’t do that then you’re not a fan. I divulge a lot in my album. I know the questions that people ask, so really the only way you’ll get to know me is through my music.”

Whenever two very outspoken artists’ opinions collide, it typically makes for a helluva display. As it pertains to “Can We Talk” crooner, Tevin Campbell, if the general consensus about what he recently re-shared from Nicki Minaj is correct, then get ya’ popcorn ready.

If you caught our prior report about the 2019 BET Awards, then you also caught that Mary J. Blige’s tribute performances to herself was a BEAST, but other than that, the other musical acts were mostly a snooze fest. That’s not because BET was necessarily slippin’ (the show itself was produced at the same high quality it always has been), but because the caliber of new aged artists they have to choose from are…well, talent-less, just sayin.’ Also, as a result, this year’s award show was reportedly the lowest ratings in BET’s history.

Is Tevin Backing Her On This?
Tevin Campbell typically speaks his mind, but when it came to a corporation like BET, he chose to remain silent…sorta. In a seemingly silent show of support for Nicki’s rage against BET, Tevin appears to be backing her BET diss on the low. He  retweeted the raptress’ Twitter rant against the network that helped support her career in the beginning:

Tevin Campbell is sick n’ tired of folks bringing up his elusive sexuality and is now speaking out about it. Apparently, fans have been on a quest to get force to acknowledge whether or not he’s into men, but the singer refuses to bow down to their demands.

Even though he did not give into their demands, he also did not deny the belief of many- that he is gay. What Tevin did do though, is check the hell outta anyone who has something to say about his singing skills, regardless of his sexual preference. New York Times best-selling author Luvvie Ajayi learned pretty quickly that the love for 90’s RB star Tevin Campbell is still strong. The critically acclaimed author Luvvie Ajayi of I’M JUDGING YOU: The Do Better Manual joined in on the discussion of what singers should pay homage to the late Aretha Franklin. Someone suggested Tevin Campbell and Luvvie seemed to scoff at the suggestion. Black Twitter did not care for her comment and they let her know it.

Now that Quincy Jones has spoken out in his now infamous interview, to do what he’s always been known to do- tell his truths- there are some bitter folks on Twitter, who have decided to spark bisexual and rape rumors about him. Although most people do not believe the rumors, it’s still has caught the attention of many. In case she looks familiar, it’s because she’s a TV host on The Today Show and for her prior birthday, the TV producers gave her the present of her life.

No matter what you think you know about a celebrity and what they are doing, you truly don’t know. Everybody lives behind closed doors… As far as what I do in my personal life, if you get to know me then you’ll know. But I have friends and family that love me for who and what I am. I don’t need other people to love me for who I am, I need them to love me for my music and if they can’t do that then you’re not a fan. I divulge a lot in my album. I know the questions that people ask, so really the only way you’ll get to know me is through my music.”
