Prior to their R&B fame, by the time they were teenagers, K-Ci and JoJo had already released 3 gospel albums. They did so with the group, Little Cedric and the Hailey Singers, which also consisted of their pops, Cliff Hailey.

ILOSM family, it’s no secret that the music we grew up on is now a bygone art…well, at least in mainstream media it is. Nevertheless, thankfully there are still a few artists who attempt to keep the old school legacy going, but honestly, most of today’s music ain’t what it used to be. The reason is probably because most artists of today lack soul (and unfortunately, some of them equally lack talent). Well, there’s one artist you can always count on to bring her A-Game every time and that artist is Fantasia. Since her American Idol debut, she has consistently offered up her music like a soul buffet, and with her recent performance during the BET Awards, she’s proven once again why she’s still a beast in the game. But her latest performance was steeped in love, after almost losing her baby brother in a motorcycle accident.

A Long Recovery

Fantasia’s brother, Xavier Barrino, was critically injured in North Carolina, after a 2017 motorcycle crash almost took his life. Fantasia and her entire family have been there during his recovery; posting updates as Xavier learns to walk again. Last year we reported on Xavier’s progress, sharing videos from both Fantasia and brother, Ricco’s, Instagram pages. In a since deleted video, Fantasia expressed how proud she was, as Xavier stood up for the first time since the accident:

Although Xavier needed the assistance of both his mother and his physical therapist to stand up, the sheer determination and will to recover was very evident in his face at that time as well. In Fantasia’s caption, she wrote:

“My Father is Awesome 👏🏾😢 @xavierbarrino I’m so proud of you baby You never gave up the fight I TOLD YALL HE WOULD WALK AGAIN AND IM STANDING ON THAT ‘HE WILL’ Father THANK YOU 🙏🏾”

Now, almost two years later, Xavier is making even more progress and Fantasia gave an update right before she took the stage at the BET Awards on Sunday night.

When it comes to Fantasia’s beautiful daughter, Zion, we’ll start this article off with the obvious question: Where did the time go?!! That is the question that Zion prompted in the rare family photos Fantasia recently shared of herself, her rarely seen daughter’s father, and their daughter on her graduation day.

Many of us probably remember when ‘Tasia had her adorable little girl walking red carpets with her some years ago. Well Zion is a lot older now and looks completely different from her cute, braided hairdo days. Zion took a break from the spotlight for a minute and came back blossomed into what you’re about to see below.

Now we should all should know that in order to build someone up, you must not have to tear another person down– apparently gospel artist Kim Burrell missed that piece of advice.

Recently speacking at a church service Kim Burrell shared her feelings about Fantasia possibly being in a movie about Aretha Franklin, while mentionioning Le’Andria Johnson the season three winner of the BET gospel singing competition show Sunday Best and how she prefers her over Fantasia.

While offering support for Le’Andria Johnson, Kim says, “Girl, you got this. You are anointed, you are a chosen of the Lord,” she said about the  36-year-old singer. “The hand of the Lord is upon your life and you’re such a warrior. I was watching her sing tonight and I was just shaking my head. If they’re going to make a movie about Aretha Franklin, if they know a real singer they’ll call you. If they want to do Aretha any kind of justice. Now I like Fantasia, but she ain’t no Le’Andria.”

After those sentiments were voice the aduidence seemed to have a differing opinions. Kim goes on to say, “Why y’all don’t like to tell the truth?” she responded. “Ain’t no way in the world.”

Le’Andria Johnson recently did an Instagram Live video where she let fans know that she was going to a substance abuse treatment facility for 30 days. “I owe it to myself, I owe it to God, I owe it to my kids, my family,” she said in the video. In it, you could see Johnson starting the intake process at the facility, talking with staff, and overall, maintaining a positive outlook despite what she was there for.

If there’s one thing everybody knew about the “Queen of Soul,” it was that she took no nonsense and had no problem throwing her fair share of shade when she felt the need. It was entertaining, comical, and unapologetically Aretha. But THAT’s what made Aretha, well…Aretha and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Needless to say, there were more than a few celebrities who have felt the wrath of the late soul icon’s unwavering shade tossing  (*coughs* Luther Vandross, Dionne Warwick, Nicki Minaj, etc.) and one of them was Fantasia Barrino.

That’s right, even though Fantasia is young enough to have been Aretha’s grandbaby, the ‘queen’ saw her for what she was- a force to be reckoned with on stage. Therefore, she made no qualms about putting Fantasia allll the way in her place, to let her know the difference between music icon and an R&B singer who’s still on the come up. The latter description is precisely what Fantasia was at that time.

What Had Happened Between Aretha & Fantasia Was…

Days after our beloved Ms. Franklin passed away on August 16th, 2018, from pancreatic cancer, Fantasia spoke with Billboard to reminisce about one of her fondest memories of the soul diva. She recalled the time she performed as part of a tribute for Aretha Franklin, who checked her somethin’ SERIOUS as soon as she stepped off the stage. Don’t take our word for it though, hear it straight from Fantasia herself…

Fantasia Barrino: “I was able to sing for her when they were honoring her [at a 2007 tribute concert] at the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles, which is actually where I won ‘American Idol.’ I was stupid nervous because I was the little girl that was listening to Aretha. My first cassette was Aretha Franklin.

“They took us downstairs [after the show], and I remember the door opening, and I just burst out crying as she came in. She walked around the room gracefully, as Aretha would do — very smooth. She shook hands, gave people one or two words and kept it moving. She finally gets to me, and she looks at me — I’m still crying. And she said, ‘You can sing — but I’m the bitch around here. I’m thinking, ‘Wait a minute! That’s not what I was ready for!’ But she was serious. She said it, and I said, ‘Yes, ma’am.’ And I understood exactly what she was saying because she was that in my life, for me. There will never, ever be another Aretha Franklin. That’s what she was letting me know: ‘You’re good, but always know, I’m the head chick.’ And that’s what it is.”

During a prior video interview (above), talk show host, Wendy Williams, told this to Aretha, as it pertains to how she thinks Aretha gets down in her romantic relationships and marriages:

“You seem like the type of woman who still falls and can get as stupid as the rest of us girls,” Wendy boldly stated to Aretha.

Clearly unamused by Wendy’s assumption, that she cuts up and acts a fool in her relationships, Aretha shut Wendy down with the quickness. Here’s how the rest of that convo’ played out:

Singer, Fantasia Barrino, couldn’t be more proud and inspired by her lil’ bro, Xavier Barrino, right about now. It’s been almost one year since he’s been able to walk, following the horrific car accident that nearly killed him. Yet, he’s been determined, since day one, that he will be back on his feet again.  Now, in the words of their brother, Ricco Barrino, Xavier is “making leaps and bounds” with his progress.

Ricco shared the latest news about Xavier’s progress on Instagram. He posted video footage of Xavier slowly walking up and down a mock staircase, with assistance from his nurse. In his caption, Ricco big up’d his brother for the hard work he’s been putting in and encouraged his IG followers to show some love to Xavier for motivation:

As you can see in the above video, Xavier wore full length braces on both of his legs and was carefully gripping the side rails for stability. Yet, the look of determination on his face was apparent- it showed that the brotha refuses to give up and because of his drive, he’s now seemingly light years ahead of where he was in February 2018…

As you can see, standing up is very painful for Xavier and requires a lot of his energy, but he is not quitting and that means he’s already won half the battle. There’s still grief in the Barrino family though…

Nephew Of Fantasia Tragically Killed Weeks Before Brother’s Accident

On February 13, 2018, the tragic news that Fantasia’s nephew had died, surfaced all over the internet. His name was Tyquan Washington and he was just 18 years old, when he was shot and killed in Greensboro, NC. It was reported that Tyquan had gotten into an argument with a 21 year old suspect, named David Lee White, Jr. and the argument spilled into the streets. During the altercation, White, Jr. allegedly shot Tyquan, who later died at a Greensboro hospital. Fantasia took to Instagram to share the tragic news about her brother/singer, Ricco Barrino’s, son:

Ricco, who is best known for the recent hit song, “California,” is devastated by his son’s murder and shortly after Tyquan died, Ricco posted an emotional letter online:

I wanted you to know that from the depths of my heart your daddy loves you and he always has. I remember holding you for the first time that’s when I knew that I had to do something other than work in somebody’s factory so that one day you could look up to me. As I write this letter with tears streaming down my face I want you to know that I showed you tough love because I knew you were something special. I never forget the first time that me and your mother took you to gymnastics for tryouts. I remember the lady walking over to us and telling us that we would have to wait behind a long list of other kids lol I guess she didn’t know what my kid was capable of because when she turned around she spotted you turning somersaults as if you were in the US Olympics. I remember her immediately turning around and tell us have your kid here next week! I remember your mother smiling from ear to ear because she knew that the people really didn’t want you in their program until they seen what you could do. I knew you were special when you came out the womb I remember watching you run fast and play with your uncle Zay with your little plats in your hair those high cheekbones like your mother and that little raspy chuckle you used to do while you had on your number seven air Jordans that was so small they look like little lightning Rods as you ran across the floor and wrestled with your uncle. I knew you were special when all the older kids wanted to hang with you. I knew you were leader at that moment and All the way up to your first big 18th birthday. I’ll never forget that birthday I was smiling from ear to ear telling everybody in the studio that my son is finally becoming a man. I wanted to be there every day for you and there wasn’t a day that went by I didn’t wonder where you were. Fantasia & Family Ask For Prayers

Fast forward to a few days later and ‘Tasia’s brother still has a long way to go toward recovery, with his ninth surgery in just nine days. While visiting her brother in the hospital to check on his progress, Fantasia did one of the most unselfish, gracious acts of kindness no one expected. As she continues to worry and pray for her brother’s recovery, she took some time to grant the request of another patient.

What Fantasia Did For Another Patient

While at the hospital, a woman went to Fantasia and asked her to please sing to her husband, who had also just been in a severe car accident that left him paralyzed. Without hesitation, ‘Tasia put herself to the side and used her gift to uplift that woman’s husband. It is a very touching thing to see and the patient was clearly overwhelmed with emotion, as Fantasia went into his room, looked into his eyes and sang to him like only she can. In between her singing, she paused several times to offer words of encouragement, saying things like “it’s okay.” Watch Fantasia do what she does in the video clip below.
