Raven-Symoné opened up about what it was like for her to grow up as a homosexual child actress, and the many struggles she faced in Hollywood because of it. She also revealed on ET’s ‘It Got Better’ series, what she was forced to do in desperate attempts to hide her sexuality from the world, and why she was forced to do so. Simply put, while we were all gushing over the adorable little child star on our TV screens back in the day, Raven was silently struggling with her sexuality throughout her life, ever since she was that adorable child.

We’re happy that Raven decided to share her story because she’s helping so many other young people out there who are struggling with their sexuality and fear of being themselves.

Why It Was Difficult For Raven To Come Out

Ever since 36-year-old Raven was a 4 year old kid star, she said she’s had a team of people in the industry telling her what and how to be. So although she knew she was gay since she was 12 (well, she actually kind of knew between the ages of about 9-10 years old, but she was 100% certain by 12), the pressure made her FORCE herself to date guys and be intimate with them, while compromising herself and her true sexuality, in an attempt to hide it from the world and ‘protect the Raven-Symoné brand.’ Raven confessed that she’d planned to take her sexuality secret to the grave and just marry a man, while having a girlfriend on the side so she could be happy. But after coming out, she felt free:

“I didn’t have to have a ‘beard.’ I didn’t have to have a man standing by me,” she says. “I felt lighter, I felt like I could go out and not have to put on 17 different hats to be myself,” says Raven.

It wasn’t until Raven stepped away from the industry, went to college, and fell in love with (her now ex-girlfriend) model/former “Empire” actress, Azmarie, that she stopped caring about what everyone thought. At 27 Raven officially came out publicly as a proud lesbian woman and shocked the world. Good for her.

HOW RAVEN’S PARENTS REACTED TO HER ‘COMING OUT’

Raven eventually told her parents that she was gay once she became an adult and she says they had mixed reactions. Her dad told her he always thought she was and her mom is still struggling with it to this day, kind of hoping that Raven is in a “phase.” Raven is 100% sure that she is not.

Why He Was Arrested

Throughout the past few years, the former “That’s So Raven” star, has had a plethora of legal problems. This go ’round he was reportedly caught red-handed, steppin’ out of a trap house:

Via TMZ– [Orlando Brown] was arrested Monday afternoon in Las Vegas after cops witnessed him go in and out of a motel in a high drug and prostitution area … according to law enforcement sources. We’re told cops pulled over the cab Brown got in after he quickly left the motel, and he initially refused to cooperate with cops during the stop … so he was cuffed. Our sources say cops found a bag of drugs on Brown — later determined to be meth — and a pipe … and also discovered a warrant out for his arrest for an unrelated domestic violence case.

Back to that epic Raven Symone tatt’ of his. In case y’all didn’t notice, in Orlando’s latest mugshot, his new Raven tattoo is on full display. A few days ago, he’d previously popped up on social media, proudly showing off his new tatt’ in the video clip below…

Why is that whole thing strange? For several reasons. First up, we’ll start with the fact that although he dated Raven back in the day, when they co-starred on That’s So Raven, they broke up years ago, and according to Orlando, she doesn’t even keep in touch with him. Next up is the fact that he crossed the line when he told the world about his and Raven’s past sex-scapades in a prior interview.

As we previously reported, during an interview with Vlad TV, Orlando was asked about a line he rapped in his song, “No Fear,” where he talked about Raven performing oral sex on him and vice versa. That’s when he decided to give WAY too much information…as if the oral sex line wasn’t already enough. In the video below, Orlando, went into yet another strange rant when he compared Raven’s breasts to cataracts eye disease…told y’all he went far, in a weird way though. Anywho, he starts talking about their past together around the 2:57 (video contains graphic language)…

Raven Chose NOT To Include Orlando In Show’s Reboot

After it was announced, in 2017, that Raven was bringing “Raven’s Home”- a spin off of the highly acclaimed kid’s show, “That’s So Raven”- to television, her fans were excited. But there was one catch, Orlando Brown, who was a vital part of “That’s So Raven’s” prior success, would have NO parts of her new show. Translation: Raven is not trying to be anywhere near her ex-boyfriend who runs his mouth a tad too much for her liking.

At any rate, maybe Orlando will find solace in his new neck tattoo of Raven, every time he looks in the mirror. Also, we hope the brotha gets whatever help he needs, because he’s actually an incredibly talented actor.

We all remember how Raven Symone caught a boatload of flack last year for her discriminatory comment stating “I’m not about to hire you if your name is Watermelondrea.” It seemed to be aimed at Black women with perceived ‘ghetto’ names and although she apologized, she’ll probably never live that down, which brings us to today.

A new pic (shown below) surfaced of Raven rockin’ this pink and blond mohawk, bedazzled with silver hoops lining the sides and folks on Instagram let her have it.  I wonder if she would classify this as her “Watermelondrea” inspired moment…

Even if she doesn’t consider her ‘do a “Watermelondrea” inspiration, the internet still gave her a taste of her own past judgement and clowned her simply based off of her hair, not her personal character, just liked she’d done with her prior name discrimination….

Raven will debut her ‘do on “RuPaul’s Drag Race” show, but nope, this isn’t a drag costume, this is just her style.

As you can see, some thought it was cool and others thought it was laughable at best. I simply think it’s a form of self-expression, but based on Raven’s previous name discrimination, it does make you wonder if she ever noticed that some of her hairdos could be considered ‘Watermelondrea-ish,’ so she might wanna rethink that whole judge-a-book-by-it’s-cover thing…just saying. We’ve still got love for you though Raven!

You may recall when Nene put The View co-host, Joy Behar, on blast for trying to make her look bad when she appeared on the show about two weeks ago. Nene was mad that Joy questioned her brand and also questioned her about marrying her husband Greg, divorcing him, only to marry him again.
Then yesterday, Nene told Andy Cohen that Raven Symone was “real nasty-like” toward her and that she did not appreciate how Raven was supposedly looking her up and down during her View appearance. Remember when looking a person up and down was considered a pre-fight stare down back in the day? LOL, okay that’s a lil’ off-topic…I know…moving on…

Here’s what Nene told Cohen about Raven and Joy:

“As far as what the cameras shot or showed, I don’t know. It didn’t show everything, but I could tell you that there were a couple of people on that panel who were very shady,” she added.

When Cohen asked Nene who else was mean to her, Nene confirmed that it was Raven Symone, who she said had in fact been looking her up and down “real nasty-like.”

“I didn’t like that, because, first of all, I was invited to their show. I was there to promote Chicago and other things,” Nene said.

“They asked me to bring pictures of my home there, and I brought the pictures they asked me to bring. And they just weren’t kind. They did not have nice manners.”

Nene then put the cherry on top when she ended her rant in true Nene Leakes reality TV fashion by saying: “I know all of them [the View hosts] are tired: their hairstyles are tired, their makeup is tired. Whatever.”

We should have known that it was only a matter of time before two of the most controversy causing women on television were gonna bump heads. Nene gets into it with almost every woman she meets (well at least that’s how it’s been for her on RHOA) and Raven has been known to piss a lot of people of lately with her sometimes offensive opinions on The View. I think that putting these two together on a panel is a blowup waiting to happen, but I give them their props for keeping it as cordial as they did on The View.

While Raven-Symoné drew ire from social media users and later walked back her remarks on the issue, Pulliam said that everyone is “entitled to their opinions.”

“On a show like ‘The View,’ that’s what they do. They sit around and they have conflicting opinions and they argue their opinions, so at the end of the day, it’s about being your authentic self,” Pulliam said in a conversation about her film “Will to Love.” “And if that is authentically her opinion, it’s hers. It doesn’t mean that I have to agree with it or you have to agree with it, or anyone else.”

Pulliam also said Raven-Symoné faces added pressure from being in the public eye, where every move she makes is scrutinized.

“It’s challenging having grown up the way she did. So from the other side of the coin, I empathize with her, where anything that she says and does is under the microscope,” Pulliam told host Nancy Redd. “So I’m not here to judge her or to bash her or anything like that. Ultimately, Raven has to kind of find her own and do it her own way.” Source.

Social media is where Raven felt the brunt of the backlash because folks were using the medium to give their brutally honest opinions to voice what they think about her and her sometimes ill-informed views. I think this recent backlash was a building process ever since folks first got wind of Raven’s true thought process after she went on the Oprah Show a while back and made it known that she did not want to be viewed as African American (although that is what she is), nor that she did not want to be viewed as gay (although that’s what she has openly stated that she and her girlfriend are). Now people are simply fed up and they spoke out about it…LOUDLY.

In fact, they spoke so loud that after about 4 days or so, Raven felt the pressure to finally issue a public apology and attempt to explain where she was coming from. So here it is…

We give Raven’s dad respect for letting the world know how he feels about this. Raven is human and she will make mistakes just like the rest of us, but she probably needs to take some time to re-evaluate her world and the world around her, and then come back out with some more rational opinions/views.  There’s one thing we can actually respect about Raven though- it’s the fact that she always speaks her mind, which is like somewhat of a rarity when dealing with celebs, who so often try to hide the real them in public, out of fear of backlash. Well Raven doesn’t have that fear, but her views are sometimes slightly ill-informed in my humble opinion. It would be great for her if she kept that outspokenness, but maybe next time she should do more research, soul-searching, history lessons, whatever, to make sure that she isn’t stereotyping others and that she’s giving a fair assessment with her views, because when speaking on such a huge mainstream platform, like The View, her words can either add to unjust stereotypes, or help to eliminate them altogether.

Raven, being an openly gay woman, should understand firsthand what it’s like for people to unfairly judge her based on factors that she cannot change, which is what she did when she judged some African Americans based on their names. We can only hope that she’s learned a valuable lesson from this one, because again, she’s human and just like the rest of us, she makes mistakes.
