As we all know, Will Smith once played boxing icon, Muhammad Ali…but little did we know, the brotha damn near had an Ali-George Forman “Rumble In The Jungle” moment behind the scenes with “In Living Color,” veteran, Tommy Davidson. According to Tommy, the fiasco was over Will’s wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith. It went down in 1998, as Tommy and Jada were in the midst of filming their movie, “Woo.”

What Had Happened Was…

In his memoir, “Living In Color,” Tommy Davidson revealed that he and Jada Pinkett-Smith formed a very close platonic bond during filming, and would oftentimes have several heartfelt personal talks on set. However, the near-fight with Will was supposedly sparked over something else altogether different…a on-set kiss.

Tommy wrote that he didn’t like the original ending for “Woo,” and the film’s producers agreed.  So, he called a phone meeting with Jada and the producers to discuss his idea for an alternative ending instead: to have his and Jada’s characters dance as the film credits rolled. Everyone liked Tommy’s ending better than the original, and agreed to go forward with his plan.

Though Tommy had previously discussed the kiss he felt his character should do with Jada’s during the dancing scene, he says he failed to mention it to Jada during the phone call:

“I didn’t know this: You have to rehearse a kiss,” Tommy Davidson writes. “You can’t just spring it on your costar … And I didn’t think it was all that big of a deal.”

Nevertheless, Tommy Davidson still felt comfortable enough with Jada to lean in for the kiss as they were filming the closing scene in “Woo.” He says as soon as he went for it, he can sense Jada flinching, likely because the kiss caught her off guard.

Needless to say that soon after the scene was wrapped, the kiss didn’t go over so well with Jada’s hubby, Will Smith – who was her fiancé at that time. According to Tommy, Will barged into his trailer and said, “I didn’t appreciate that.” Tommy says he responded by further provoking Will, seemingly in retaliation for Will steppin’ to him like that inside his trailer…things only got more heated from there:

“Will went all gangsta on me, saying what I did was not cool,” Davidson wrote. “There was a moment there when we might have come to blows. My reactive fight-or-flight instinct was triggered and I could have exploded.”

They’re In A Better Space Today

Thankfully, Tommy and Will’s potential “Rumble In The Jungle” brawl didn’t fully cross that line because Jada broke it up. Tommy wrote that Jada followed Will in hot pursuit as he was headed to Tommy’s trailer because she obviously sensed something was about to pop off. Sure enough Jada’s instincts were right, and she was able to step in to get Will and Tommy to calm down.

The great news is that Tommy Davidson says to this day, whenever he sees Will and Jada everything is super cool between them and neither he nor will hold ill feelings toward each other. On a side note, Tommy even took the time to credit Jada’s mom, Adrienne Banfield-Jones — a recovered drug addict — with helping him to kick his past drug habit years ago.

Gotta luv a happy ending right? Especially one that doesn’t involve “entanglement”…nor a slap, just sayin.’

Comedian/actor, Tommy Davidson, opened up about what it was like for him, after he was dumped in a big pile of trash as a baby, and ultimately growing up with a “sister who looked like ‘Cindy Brady'” and a “brother who looked like David Cassidy from The Partridge Family. He discussed his experiences in detail, on Oprah: Where Are They Now, and also on The Huffington Post.

On His Black Mom Dumping Him In Trash & Being Rescued By His White Mom

Tommy revealed that when he was a baby his birth mother dumped him in a pile of trash, like he was just a load of garbage and left him for dead. His (adopted) mother just so happened to be walking by that trash pile at the right time and saw his tiny foot sticking out and quickly got him to the hospital.

“My mom who raised me, something told her to look behind this tire that was in a pile of trash, and she saw my foot,” Tommy said.

He had major contusions and fractures to his skull at that time, leaving the doctors to wonder if he would even survive.

And it turns out Tommy did more than just survive, he became a highly respected comedian that we know him as today, but that journey to success was not void of turmoil and pains for Tommy. Growing up during the civil rights era in a family that was completely Caucasian (with the exception of himself), came with it’s fair share of racist backlash and confusion. His family loves him dearly, but some folks in society during that time, didn’t love him so much, nor did they understand him.

Davidson On Hardships Of Growing Up In His Loving White Family

Tommy said he was officially adopted by his family when he was two years old. Shortly after that, the family moved to D.C. and this is what Tommy said about it:

“We moved to Washington, D.C., the week Martin Luther King Jr. got shot. So we move into one of the worst black cities. “There’s a riot, tear gas, tanks and federal troops are there. Me, my sister and my brother were laying on the floor in the car wondering what the hell was going on.”

The world’s perception of him being the odd ‘colored kid’ in his family of White people, confused him as a child.

“Here I was, a great, bright-eyed kid who had never heard the N-word, who had never heard ‘white cracker’ and was being called that by both [races],” he said. “I thought it was so stupid because, when I was a kid, I didn’t think that black people were black, I thought that we were brown like a crayon. And my sister was like peach, with the crayon.” But he also said that “The love that I got didn’t have any color.”

Because he experienced the type of love that was colorless as a child, he revealed that he always had a deep question- that I think is very practical by the way- and that was “Why are the brown people always helping the peach people and the peach people have more?”

In case you haven’t seen the In Living Color reunion video yet, we have it right here for your full enjoyment. During the Tribeca Film Festival, the cast rejoined for a night.

In a previous ILOSM article, we discussed the In Living Color cast‘s feelings regarding the pending 25-year reunion. And now, it has happened. In a night of smiles, laughter, and nostalgia, some of the cast for the show made a lasting appearance at the festival tribute.

According to Comedy Hype, Keenen Ivory Wayans, Kim Wayans, Shawn Wayans, David Alan Grier, and Tommy Davidson even participated in an interview, after the showing of In Living Color‘s first episode.

Keenen mentions that he and Robert Townsend were good friends in the show’s beginning. During the first minutes of his interview, Wayans says that — although they were known for their standup — they were better at writing sketches.

Everyone has a beginning. Tommy Davidson remembers when Sean “Diddy” Combs was helping him with his bags and driving him around. Now, he’s a mogul.

Tommy Davidson, widely known for his pioneering roles on In Living Color, participated in an interview while sharing life stories. During one of his reflections, he mentioned a short fact which caught Sway by total surprise.

“…Diddy was my assistant…”

That’s a huge statement. That’s putting a lot on it, one could say. However, Tommy Davidson said it and went on to elaborate how it came to be.

According to Tommy, Diddy is responsible for what’s going on now…”the mogulism.” But at Sean Combs’ beginning, as an intern, he was learning from Andre Harrell — founder of Uptown Records and once-CEO of Motown Records — as well as learning from Russell Simmons.
