Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey has often talked about her family situation and how difficult it was for her growing up as a biracial child. But still there are many who question whether or not Mariah is actually half Black. So we decided to lay it out on the table and let folks see Mariah’s African American side of the fam’ once and for all. Mariah’s father, Alfred Roy Carey, is of African-American and African-Venezuelen descent. Alfred’s father was an African-Venezuelan and his mother was an African American woman from Alabama.

Mariah Carey (L); her dad, Alfred Roy; and her sister, Alison (R)

Mariah’s dad and her mother, Patricia, were married when Mariah was young, but their marriage ultimately ended because they eventually succumbed to all of the racial backlash and mistreatment they were getting from so many people of all races during the civil rights era.

After her parents divorced when she was still a young girl, Mariah and her father began to drift apart and Mariah ultimately ended up regretting that they didn’t spend more time together before her father passed away from cancer. He passed away after Mariah became a multiplatinum selling singer, so he did get a chance to see her flourish in life.

After Patricia and Alfred divorced in 1973, Alfred started seeing their three children only on a weekly basis. After a while, those visits became less frequent and eventually Alfred and Mariah didn’t really keep in touch much at all. Mariah said this about she and her dad’s relationship after her parents’ divorced:

[We] had a good relationship for about a minute after the divorce. He’s a good person, I don’t have anything against him. It’s just very difficult growing up in a divorced family. The tension, anger, and bitterness between the parents is often put off on the children. And because I was so young when they divorced, it was a major split for me.”

Mariah and her father, Alfred Carey

Mariah said that her parents’ failed marriage and the way that it ultimately affected her, was the reason why she had such a negative outlook on marriage:
For a long time the divorce colored her attitude towards the institution of marriage.

“That made me feel very anti-marriage. I thought that I’d never marry. Everyone wishes they had the Brady Bunch family. But it’s not reality.”

Mariah Carey’s paternal grandmother

Mariah Carey’s paternal grandfather

Although Mariah eventually realized that she had very little in common with her Pops’- he was not a lover of music, her mother was a singer though; her dad was a skilled mathematician and that is not Mariah’s forte at all- Mariah’s grateful that she was able to discover that on her own without being persuaded in any way by her Mother, whom she says never talked ill of their pops, even after all of the heated arguments and drama they experienced in their marriage:

“Lucky for me, my mother never said anything negative about my father. She never discouraged me from having a good feeling about him. She always taught me to believe in myself, to love all the things I am. In that sense I’m very lucky, because I could have been a very screwed-up person.”

Mariah had a change of heart and decided to find her Dad after years of not speaking to him and well after she had sold millions of records. They reconnected, but their time together wasn’t long because Alfred was battling cancer. Here’s what Mariah said about her redeveloping a relationship with her father:

“When you grow up with one parent, you get one side of the story. I’m not saying there was a deliberate thing that happened, but that’s just the way it is. I was fortunate to find out things I never knew about my father. For one thing, I never knew he was in touch with my music and my career. He wrote me a letter: ‘It doesn’t matter whatever is happening, you’ve always been a star to me, even before anybody knew who you were.’ It meant so much to me. I never knew he was sentimental. I was grateful to be able to spend time with him before he got sick. It was unfortunate that I lost him so soon after, but I was grateful for the time I was able to spend with him.”

Mariah Carey with her Dad (R) and her nephew (L)

Mariah’s dad succumbed to cancer in 2002 on the 4th of July. As he took his last breathe, Mariah held his hand…a day she will never forget. The little girl whom Alfred wasn’t there for when she needed him to teach her about boys, life, and how to deal with being teased because of her mixed heritage, was ultimately there for him when he needed her the most. He didn’t need the lights, nor the fame in his last days, he simply needed his own flesh and blood holding his hand and helping him transition.

ILOSM fam’ this is just a reminder that no matter how long a parent has been out of their children’s lives and made some bad decisions with their parental responsibilities, it is never too late to at least try to ask for forgiveness from their child. If the remorse is sincere, the child can feel it, although they don’t necessarily have to accept it, but that’s just the price that parent has to pay. It’s better late, than never though. In Mariah’s case, the damage was already done, but she and her Pops were fortunate enough to not have waited until it was too late to allow the healing to begin.

Mariah’s 2002 album, Charmbracelet, was released 6 months after her dad’s death and she dedicated a song to her father on that album titled, “Sunflowers For Alfred Roy.”

C+C Music Factory members: David Cole, Freedom Williams, Deborah Cooper

Most of us Old Schoolers remember C+C Music Factory’s ’90s classics, “Gonna Make You Sweat” and “Things That Make You Go Hmmm.” But if you’re like some of here at ILOSM, you may not have known that the Grammy award winning, multiplatinum selling group lost one of it’s founding members, David Cole, at a very young age.

If you recall, C+C Music Factory’s first album, “Gonna Make You Sweat,”- which featured David’s music partner, Robert Clivillés, as well as rapper, Freedom Williams, and singers, Zelma Davis, and Martha Wash- had huge success in the U.S. and abroad. Their second album in 1994, was a different story though, it barely made the Billboard charts and fans didn’t flock to the stores for it, like they’d done previously. Throughout that time, the public was unaware that David Cole was very sick. Check out the shocking details surrounding his death…

David Cole

On January 24, 1995, just one year after C+C+Music Factory released their sophomore album, Anything Goes!, David Cole passed away from spinal meningitis. The thing that shocked folks even more is that his spinal condition was listed as a complication from the AIDS virus, which David had quietly been battling for a while, according to several media reports.
He was just 32 years old at the time of his death and as far as we know, he didn’t have any children and wasn’t married, but he was survived by his mother, grandmother, and three sisters- all of whom are from Passaic, NJ.

C+C Music Factor: (L – R) Robert Clivillés, Deborah Cooper, Freedom Williams, David Cole

David Cole, along with his C+C Music Factory co-founder, Robert Clivillés, produced several hits and remixes for music legends like Natalie Cole, Luther Vandross, Mariah Carey, and others. David also won a Grammy for his work on The Bodyguard soundtrack, starring the late Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner.

MARIAH CAREY RELEASED “ONE SWEET DAY” WITH BOYZ II MEN IN MEMORY OF DAVID COLE

It was Mariah Carey who, just months after David passed away in 1995, wrote the beautiful tribute song, “One Sweet Day,” with Boyz II Men, in honor of her friend/collaborator, David Cole.

David Cole- one of the underrated musical gems of the ’90s R&B/hip hop/pop eras. Although he had to leave this earth so soon, his musical legacy will continue to live on. Rest easy David Cole.

(L) Mariah Carey; (R) Nick Cannon

Happy Father’s day to all fathers out there. And Happy Juneteenth to everyone who celebrates #BlackExcellence in all it’s glory. Those are also the same sentiments Mariah Carey seems to share on this beautiful day.

The songstress is celebrating her heritage, as well as her late Black father…and her children are doing the same. Only factor that seems to be missing from Mariah’s homage is her ex-hubby and father of their fraternal twins, Nick Cannon…and she’s seemingly not alone on that one…just ask some of Nick’s other baby mamas as well. But we’ll recap the latter point in a sec.’

Anywho, Mariah took to social media to share her thoughts about the Juneteenth and Father’s Day holidays, by sharing a photo of her and Nick’s daughter, Monroe, and son, Moroccan. The photo displayed their precious mini-me’s happily embracing one another, as they seemingly stared at a photo of their grandfather, Alfred Carey. Mariah captioned the photo with the following statement:

“Celebrate Your Black Excellence! #HappyJuneteenth
#HappyFathersDay Rest in Power Alfred Roy Carey🌻❤️”

It didn’t go unnoticed that Mariah conveniently left Nick completely outta the picture. This observation could mean absolutely nothing…or it could also possibly give insight into how Mariah currently feels about Nick and his fatherhood status as of late.

As many of y’all already know, Nick has been having babies left n’ right with several women, sometimes simultaneously throughout the past few years. He is currently the father of seven children total (one of them sadly passed away), with another two babies supposedly on the way. In case y’all are confused about Nick’s baby makin’ timeline (we most definitely understand), here’s a quick breakdown:

Nick Cannon and the mothers of his children [via TMZ]

Via Parade
—Mariah Carey (whom he was married to from 2008-2016) is the mother of twins Monroe and Moroccan Scott.

—Brittany Bell (his then-girlfriend) is the mother of Golden “Sagon” and Powerful Queen.

—Abby de la Rosa (his then-partner) is the mother of twins born June 14, 2021.

—Alyssa Scott (a model who appeared on Cannon’s music game show Wild ‘n Out) gave birth on June 23, 2021 to Zen, who was Cannon’s fourth child in the last year.

—Bre Tiesi (a model and actress) is currently expecting with Cannon’s eighth child.

There is also a ninth child reportedly on the way by Nick’s prior baby moms, Abby de la Rosa…according to The Guardian.

At this point, it’s unclear how Mariah really feels about her ex-husband poppin’ up with so many kids so quickly (he reportedly had four kids in one year alone). But it’s evident (at least thus far) that she is not down with publicly being thrust into the social media trap of now being referred to as one of Nick’s ‘many baby mamas.’

Bri Teisi’s Father’s Day 2022 tribute to her child’s dad, Nick Cannon [via Instagram]
However, it is worth noting that one of the loves of Nick’s life, Bri Teisi, offered inside info about how well she and all of the mothers of Nick’s kids get along great:

“I feel like everybody is focused on their own family and their own situation,” she told The Daily Mail, “and we’re all very supportive and just respect that. Like, ‘That’s your family, this is ours and [if] you need anything, we’re here.’”

As far as any Father’s Day tributes to Nick by his other women, two of them have directly shown him public love on his big day. Bri Teisi, Abby de la Rosa, and Brittany Bell — each of whom Nick seems to currently be romantically involved with — took to social media to shout him out.

Nick has been straight up about his relationships as of late, revealing that he’s an advocate polygamous relationships, which he seems to have mastered very well. All of the mothers appear to maintain great relationships with him.

Moral of this story…as long as one can be a great father to his seeds, and maintain healthy relationships with all involved, then that’s all that matters. Nick seems to be doing a helluva job…amid his pretty busy personal life these days.

(L) Murder Inc. Records founder, Irv Gotti; (R) Singer, Mariah Carey, with then-husband and former Sony Music executive, Tommy Mottola

Most of us, Old Schoolers, are somewhat familiar the history of Mariah Carey’s marriage to Sony Music’s former head executive, Tommy Mottola. They wed in 1993, when Mariah was 24 and Tommy was 44. They divorced in 1998, and Mariah later referred to Tommy as having been emotionally abusive, controlling and revealed that she was “miserable, crying, and alone” throughout their marriage.

After their marriage was a wrap, Mariah continued to capitalize off of the career that Mottola was largely responsible for. She went on to sell many more millions of albums and needless to say, Mottola reportedly was not feelin’ that.

Irv Gotti On How Mottola ‘Got Revenge’ Against Mariah

Mariah Carey with then-husband, former Sony Music exec, Tommy Mottola

To back up that claim, in an interview with Desus & Mero, Murder Inc. Records founder, Irv Gotti, revealed what Mottola did to in an attempt to supposedly sabotage Mariah’s career. Not only did Irv expose Mottola’s shut-down of Mariah, he also gave insight into why Mariah has been throwing so much shade at Jennifer Lopez. In 2001 — three years after Mariah and Tommy divorced — Murder Inc. was dominating the music game. According to Irv Gotti, that’s when Tommy Mottola used their success to get back at Mariah, by boosting then-music-newcomer, Jennifer Lopez, and pairing her with Ja Rule, instead. It was Mottola’s attempt to draw attention away from the music Mariah Carey had created with the Murder Inc. crew, says Irv.

Irv Gotti: “[Mottola] calls me because he found out me and [Ja] Rule made a record with Mariah Carey. At the time, he hated Mariah Carey, so he was pumping Jennifer Lopez to compete.”

Irv says Mottola then asked him to record and promote a Jennifer-Ja-Rule duet instead.

“Immediately when he said that, I was like, ‘This [ni&&a]! He knows we just did this sh*t with Mariah and he’s trying to f*ck Mariah,’” said Gotti.

But that’s not all though, see what else Irv Gotti exposed about that situation in the video clip below, starting at the 2:13 mark (contains graphic language)…

“I’m Real” ended up being a mega-hit and Murder Inc.’s Mariah Carey duet was pushed to the side.

Geesh…I was aware that Michael Jackson once referred to Tommy Mottola as “the devil,” but apparently, Tommy’s alleged payback toward his ex-wife, Mariah, seemed kinda devil-ish too.

It’s A New Day For Mottola

Ironically, when Mariah became a trending topic at the start of 2017 — after her disastrous New Year’s Eve performance in Times Square — it was Tommy who came to her defense. In a letter to PageSix he defended her against the flack she caught for throwing a diva-tantrum live on the Times Square stage, after her lip synching vocals didn’t play:

Via The Telegraph: “Everyone should just get off her back and leave her the hell alone, [Mottola] wrote in a letter to PageSix.com. “Hopefully she will find her way to the right professionals for guidance. It’s never about the fall, it’s all about the recovery. […] None of these issues or problems ever existed with her in her early days at Sony.

In his letter, Mottola also criticized the pop star’s new reality show Mariah’s World. “I would never have encouraged her or guided her to do something like a reality television show!!!!! I don’t get it!!” the [then-67-year-old] wrote. … That does absolutely nothing for her integrity, her credibility, or her massive talent!! She should take a step back, think carefully and figure out what to do next.”

I guess Mottola’s reported “hate” for Mariah has subsided. Like the Old School saying goes: ‘Time heals all wounds.’

(L) Throwback photo of Stevie J and Mariah Carey; (R) Stevie J

Stevie J. never ceases to turn heads, just like he did when he dropped a dating-bombshell that had fans wondering if there’s any woman in the entertainment industry who won’t fall for him. So, who’s that lady this go ’round, you ask? Apparently, it’s Mariah Carey….that’s right, Nick Cannon’s “I Had A Vision of Love”-sangin’-ex-wife, Mariah! But of course Stevie J didn’t stop simply by saying he hooked up with her, he just had to disclose a few intimate details that he says he and Mariah once shared.

(VIDEO) Stevie Says Mariah Renamed His WHAT?!!

On his prior reality show, Leave It To Stevie, Stevie had fans scratching their heads because of his jaw-dropping claims. According to Stevie, he and Mariah have done much more than make beautiful music…

(L – R): Mase, Mariah Carey, Stevie J., and P. Diddy in Mariah’s “Honey” music video

On an interview clip from Leave It To Stevie, Stevie J. (shown above hugged up with Mariah in her “Honey” video, a song he co-produced) recalled working with Mariah on her Butterfly album. The highly successful album went five-times platinum, but Stevie claims the album wasn’t his only accomplishment. He actually said he had a past fling with Mariah, and that she did something for him after they’d reportedly hooked up.

According to Stevie, Mariah paid homage to his penis on her album credits! Stevie said when Mariah referred to him as the “fat muffin man” in her “Butterfly” album credits, she was actually showing love to his “beefcake,” because that was apparently their private inside joke, reports VH1.

Stevie J: “If you look at her credits on the Butterfly album she’s like, ’Yo, shout out to Stevie J the fat muffin man,’ cause the boy beefcake game is crazy, you feel me?”

Here’s the clip:

Since Stevie’s had no reservations about sharing details on how he throws around his “beefcake” – and not one female has yet to speak up and call him a liar – there’s a possibility he could be telling the truth about this…

IT’S NOT THE FIRST TIME

Although Stevie had fans wondering about him and Ms. Carey after his reveal, that wasn’t the first time there’s been talk about his involvement with Mariah. In more recent years, an insider shared Nick Cannon’s rumored reaction to Stevie’s alleged sexual relationship with the “Honey” singer.

A prior episode of Wild N Out went awry when the games took a serious turn, reports Daily Mail. While Stevie and Nick were roasting each other on the show, Stevie claimed he’d slept with Mariah. Almost immediately, the fun and games went completely out the window, says the witness.

Stevie’s statements have never been confirmed, since Mariah hasn’t publicly addressed the situation. Nevertheless, even if he is being truthful, the moral of the story is: as long as they didn’t hurt anyone, they had every right to get their freak on back then…they’re grown and it’s a free country, just sayin.’

We only saw one side of Michael Jackson over the years…the polite side, but most of us NEVER knew he was ’bout it like this! Michael Jackson went straight gangster! It was at a fan appreciation event called “Killer Thriller.”

To most on the inside of the music business, Michael Jackson was an excellent businessman. Additionally, it has long been proven that MJ was NOT the MJ we knew him to be. He was more like Bob Marley, Tupac, Malcolm X, or Martin Luther King– all of whom had known (or perceived) threats against there lives, and ultimately spoke out even louder to stand up for what they felt was right. Even after Michael knew there were several inside threats on his life, he would publicly speak out even more against the evils of the music industry, making sure he made it very clear to his enemies that he wasn’t NEVER scared!

Watch MJ Go Off:.

La Toya Jackson’s Claims:

Michael Jackson said most of the problems came from his buy-out of half of Sony’s song catalog. After he bought half of Sony’s publishing for $45 million (it’s now worth over a billion) he was doomed for murder, according to what he told his sister. “They are going to murder me over that catalogue,” Latoya said MJ told her. She goes on to add: “People come into your life, wiggle their way in, control you, manipulate, control your funds, your finances, everything that you have.”

La Toya Jackson

In the video above, Michael also claimed Sony was retaliating against him for being able to “out-think them.” He said they were intentionally sabotaging his name and his success; and that because of practicing good business, he was leaving Sony, owning half of Sony’s publishing.

He also went off on the then-head of Sony Music, Tommy Mottola, referring to him as a “devil.” Mottola resigned six months later.

Mariah Carey Reportedly Tried To Warn MJ?

Mariah Carey

Jackson also discussed Mariah Carey –but not before asking that cameras be turned off, then telling the crowd “you know what tape it, I don’t mind.” Jackson stated that after Mariah divorced Mottola, she came to him crying, telling him that Mottola would tap her phones and have her followed.

Ex-Wife, Lisa Marie Presley’s Claims:

Lisa Marie Presley and Michael Jackson

Lisa Marie Presley told Oprah that during a conversation in 2005 Jackson told her that he was afraid for his life. Presley told Oprah, “The final part of the conversation was him telling me that he felt that someone was going to try to kill him to get a hold of his catalogue and his estate.” She continued, “He expressed to me his concern for his life.” Presley also said Jackson gave her names but that she would prefer not to say them.

Transcript of what MJ said in the video:

“First let me say, I really don’t like to talk that much. I really don’t. I prefer to perform than talk.

Let me just say this; the tradition of great performers from, and I really want you to hear what I have to say, from Sammy Davis Junior, James Brown, to Jackie Wilson, to Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly. The story is usually the same though. These guys worked really hard at their craft but the story ends the same. They usually are broken, torn and usually just sad, because the companies take advantage of them, they really do.

Sony, being the artist that I am at Sony, I’ve generated several billion dollars for Sony, several billon. They really thought that my mind is always on music and dancing. It usually is, but they never thought that this performer, myself, would out think them.

So, we can’t let them get away with what they’re trying to do, because now I’m a free agent. I just owe Sony one more album. It’s just a box set, really, with two new songs which I’ve written ages ago. Because for every album that I record, I write literally, I’m telling you the truth I write at least 120 songs every album I do. So I can do the box set, just giving them any two songs.

So I’m leaving Sony a free agent, owning half of Sony. I own half of Sony’s Publishing and I’m leaving them and they’re very angry at me because I just did good business, you know.
So the way they get revenge is to try and destroy my album. But I’ve always said, you know, art, good art never dies.

Thank you, I love ‘Unbreakable’ (opening track on ‘Invincible’).

And Tommy Mottola is a devil! I’m not supposed to say what I’m going to say right now, but I have let you know this.

Please don’t videotape what I am going to say, ok? Turn that off, please. You know what, you know what tape it, I don’t mind! Tape it!

Mariah Carey, after divorcing Tommy, came to me crying, crying. She was crying so badly I had to hold her. She said to me, “This is an evil man and Michael, this man follows me.” He taps her phones, and he’s very, very evil and she doesn’t trust him and he is a horrible human being.

We have to continue our drive until he is terminated. We can’t allow him to do this to great artistry, we just can’t.
I just wanted to let you know, I appreciate everything you’ve done, you’ve been amazing.
You’re so loyal! Diana, everybody, Waldo, all the people here! I love you all. You’ve been amazing, I love you!
But still, but still, I promise you, the best is yet to come!”

Many of y’all may recall when Mariah’s sister – who’s reportedly a former prostitute – went public with claims that she is HIV+ and that Mariah pretty much left her out in the cold, which we’ll revisit in a sec.’ Well, in Nick Cannon’s interview with DJ Vlad, he’s giving a lil’ bit more insight into Mariah’s family drama.

Nick was asked about the status of Alison Carey’s disease and her current relationship with Mariah. That’s when he revealed that he’s never spoken to Alison before in his life, not even during his entire 8 year marriage to Mariah Carey. His reasons are cut n’ dry- he does not get down with people who intentionally try to harm their family, especially if that family member is his wife.

Nick said Mariah’s family was out to get here after she became famous and he could relate to that:

“I think that’s where we connected a lot. … Once you start to understand that people you grew up in the same household with, people that you thought was  gon’ ride with you for LIFE, turn to the MEDIA?!! Like, that’s CRAZY. This is the person I shared the bed with, but because of clout – it ain’t even about the money no more, because I can give you the bag! It’s about ATTENTION!”

When asked if Alison is HIV+, as she and her brother claim, Nick revealed he’s never even met her to know that personal info about her for sure, but that she could possibly be telling the truth:

“I’ve never met her [Alison Carey], but I’ve heard the story… but I stay out of it because…I was there for HER [Mariah]. I was her support system, so whatever she wanted to do…yeah, I’m there for her…like, WE squad. If we ain’t talking to sister, we ain’t talking to sister. [If] we ain’t talking to brother, we ain’t talking to brother. I’m with you…because I would expect the same thing. Like, Mariah would never speak on my family if that was the union and the bond.”

He then further expressed his shock to see “her SIBLINGS do interviews about her,” even though Mariah “looked up to” them growing up.

How Mariah’s Siblings Slammed Her In The Media

Between 2015 to 2016, Mariah’s sister, Alison, and brother, Morgan Carey (pictured above), were lighting her up in the press.

In case you missed it, heres a quick breakdown of their drama:

  • Mariah’s sister, Alison, has admittedly had a history of run-ins with the law for alleged prostitution, and a history of drug addiction in the past.
  • Alison’s claims range from Mariah not giving her money so she won’t wind up on the streets, to Mariah shutting her out of her life and not allowing her to meet her niece and nephew, Morroccan and Monroe.
  • Alison told Rolling Out that she had to go to church outreaches “to ask for assistance with food or rent, and that she “don’t want Mariah to think I only want her for her money, like everyone else does. I want her to love me again. I want her to be my sister again.
  • In 2015 Alison told Radar Online she was trapped in a psychiatric ward against her will and begged for Mariah to com and rescue her. She didn’t remember how she ended up there with a gash on her head, but she did remember allegedly being robbed by a man.
  • In 2016, their brother, Morgan blasted Mariah in an interview for being an “evil witch” and accused her of not helping their “dying” sister, Alison’s medical needs presumably to cover her complications from HIV.
  • A few months later, Alison was arrested for allegedly offering an undercover cop sexual favors while knowingly also having HIV.

None of the Carey siblings’ accusations against Mariah have been proven as of yet. There’s also more to their unfortunate family drama, but you pretty much get the overview of why Nick Cannon was not rockin’ with Mariah’s siblings during their marriage.

Although Mariah eventually realized that she had very little in common with her Pops’- he was not a lover of music, her mother was a singer though; her dad was a skilled mathematician and that is not Mariah’s forte at all- Mariah’s grateful that she was able to discover that on her own without being persuaded in any way by her Mother, whom she sauys never talked ill of their Pops, even after all of the heated arguments and drama they experienced in their marriage:
