We thought this story was worth sharing because we think there are lessons to be learned from it. This is from the perspective of Richard Pryor’s daughter, who had to witness some things that she shouldn’t have, while growing up with her Dad. Rain Pryor and her father were very close, but that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t have bittersweet memories of the man we know as a comedic genius and the man she knows simply as “Dad.”

We have nothing but love for Richard Pryor, but we all know that he’s admitted plenty of times interviews and in his comedy acts that he had his wild days. In 1978 Richard Pryor had to turn himself into Los Angeles police after a warrant was issued for his arrest on an ‘assault with a deadly weapon’ charge from an incident that happened at his home on New Year’s day. His wife spoke out about it in a public interview and Richard eventually included it in his stand up routine a few times.

According to the investigating officer, Sgt. Lou Bobbit, Pryor’s neighbors said they were awakened by gunfire at 8 o’clock in the morning and called the police. They then ran outside to see what was going on and they say the saw…

It’s now common knowledge that the late, legendary Richard Pryor was a wild dude back in the day and now his daughter, actress/comedian, Rain Pryor, has shared yet another wild incident that she witnessed as a child growing up with her Pops.

In her book, “The Jokes My Father Never Taught Me,” Rain revealed a situation that she said went down on a Thanksgiving Day at her family’s house…

Richard Pryor

Richard Pryor was many things, but a pushover, he was not. The man with the troubled childhood, was a gangster, but not in the minds of organized crime. However, doing what he did in the military was truly gangster-ish.

While in the Army, just a few years after the Korean War, Pryor was incarcerated for an incident that occurred while stationed in Germany. You see, the big movie of that time was Imitation of Life. It was a remake of the 1930s smash and for those who aren’t familiar with it- it was about an interracially mixed woman in the segregated south, and how that very light-skinned woman pretended to be White, so she could be accepted. The movie had many racially-charged scenes and one of Pryor’s fellow White soldiers got a little too carried away with his laughter and other racial comments about it. This is when Pryor went clean off!

Richard and several other Black soldiers beat and stabbed the White soldier for refusing to refrain from laughing about disrespectful racism in the film. The soldier’s stab wounds weren’t life threatening, but I bet he didn’t chuckle too many more times after that.

So what happened to Richard after that violent incident? As punishment, Richard spent most of his Army duty in prison. He was in the Army from 1958-1960. Who knew?!!

Now we all know Mr. Pryor found himself in trouble more times than this one. In 1954, he was

Eddie-Murphy-and-Richard-PryorYep you read this right- Richard Pryor can sing too! We all knew that Eddie Murphy could, but who knew that Richard Pryor was a crooner back in the day?!!

Many other top-name comedians have other talents, Jamie Foxx showed us he can sing and play piano, Robert Townsend an incredible writer/director. Some of us are old enough to remember the 1982 dance hit “Party All The Time” by Eddie Murphy featuring Rick James. Eddie recently did his thing again with the 2013 single ft. Snoop Dogg – see “Red Light” the reggae music video and check Eddie out playing guitar. Mr. Murphy has always been about the music biz.

“If you go back to “Saturday Night Live,” my stuff always has music, even a bunch of my comedy stuff — like in “Shrek,” the donkey is always singing. Music is always there. … I stopped putting stuff out because I didn’t want to look like those actors that be putting out records. It looks weird. Just putting out records. There’s a strange like, “What the f*** is this thing?” And I didn’t want to be part of that so I stopped putting stuff out.”

As for Eddie’s idol, who knew Richard could swing a note or two? Check it out next>>>

Della Resse and Redd Foxx
Della Resse and Redd Foxx

Iconic comedian Redd Foxx, has been gone from this earth for 27 years and he’s still considered one of the ‘greatest’ by many of today’s hottest comedians. Let Foxx’s closest friends tell it, there was also an even better side to him that many never knew.

One of those close friends, the late actress/singer, Della Reese, was friends with Foxx for 40 years. In the video below, she told a great story about the time Foxx was working at a club in Pennsylvania. She met with him backstage and confided that she didn’t have a job and needed some money. Wait ’til you see what Della said Foxx did that night, to help her get back on her feet.

Della Reese: “We were hungry together. We were out of work together,” Reese laughs loudly. “We shared sandwiches together. He (Foxx) loved helping others. The public makes him out to be a nasty mouth, mean person. He was the total opposite – a gentle loving person. If you needed something, he would go into his pocket and give it to you.”

According to Reese, the reason Redd was broke at the end of his life, was due to his extraordinary generosity. In a 1983 interview with Tom Joyner, Foxx basically confirmed that claim, stating that he was a “provider” by nature.

Redd Foxx

Redd Foxx gained notoriety with his raunchy nightclub acts during the 1950s and 1960s. Known as the “King of the Party Records,” he performed on more than 50 records in his lifetime. While working together as television co-stars of the Eddie Murphy penned “Royal Family,” the man known for a few false alarm heart attacks, succumbed right there on the set during rehearsals. Della was the first to find him and immediately thought it was another one of his gags, but sadly it was the “big one” that time…it was also the day we lost one of the best comedians to have EVER done it.

Foxx’s character as a man, as a person, is something that also changed the lives and the character of the people who’s lives he personally touched. Redd was a great example that reminds us that when we have, we should reach back and give; and when we do that, our journey on this earth will become a greater movement that’ll affect others long after we’ve closed our eyes.

Redd Foxx clearly lived up to his description of being a “provider by nature” and we thank him for all of the years of gracing us with those jokes that produced those hardcore belly-aching, tear dropping, make-you-wanna-slap-somebody laughs! Mr. Foxx, we salute you sir…rest well.

There are several other comedians who have extended that type of generosity to other comedians that they admire throughout the years. Flip the page to see what some of them have done for other comics in the game, like Richard Pryor, and more.
