Back when R&B legend, Alexander O’Neal, was the lead singer for The Time (formerly called Flyte Time) – the band Prince formulated – he says he was kicked to the curb for a very biased reason. The “If You Were Here Tonight” crooner also made no qualms about his disdain for the way he claims Prince handled the situation. O’Neal also revealed who else reportedly betrayed him and the hurt he felt as a result of their actions. Scroll down to check out the details he gave in his interview with Blues And Soul, years prior to Prince’s passing.

CLAIMS: ‘TOO DARK SKINNED’ AND ‘TOO COMPLICATED’???

Prince

According to O’Neal, he was presumably kicked outta the group for being too opinionated, while others around him believe it was because Prince felt that he was too dark skinned to be the lead singer. Thus, replacing him with a lighter hued brotha, Morris Day.

Alexander’ O’Neal: “Flyte Tyme was a wonderful band, and I felt we were on our way to getting a national deal. You know, I’d been picked to be the lead singer in a group owned by Prince; we’d started recording at Prince’s house… But then I got kicked out the band before I got kicked IN! Some people said it was because I was too black in skin pigmentation. But I still think it was because I was opinionated. I’d started showing I could think and started asking questions about the financial arrangements. But, you know, to be kicked out was heart-breaking.

WHY O’NEAL FELT BETRAYED AND DIDN’T RESPECT PRINCE’S DECISION

O’Neal explained how hurt and betrayed he felt after learning that the other members — including legendary producer duo, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis — were rehearsing presumably with the new lead singer, Morris Day, without telling him he was fired.

AO: “And the main thing I couldn’t respect about it was that Prince hadn’t been man enough to tell me. Because, all of a sudden, Flyte Tyme started rehearsing behind my back so they could become `The Time` without me! And all this time we were still doing gigs together! You know, they’d suddenly start mixing these new songs into the set and I’d be like ‘Where’s THIS coming from?’!”

Terry Lewis eventually came clean with O’Neal:

AO:”And the only one out of all of them with the balls to tell me what was happening was Terry Lewis! But, though when I got the news I was really hurt, a lotta times good things come out of a bad situation. And that was just fuel for the fire for me!”

HOW JIMMY JAM & TERRY LEWIS SAVED O’NEAL’S CAREER…AFTER PRINCE FIRED THEM TOO

Producer duo, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis

According to O’Neal, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis were responsible for saving his career and staying true to a promise they’d made him after they had also gotten fired by Prince.

AO: “Because I felt that, if I was good enough to even be CONSIDERED for a group by Prince, then I must be good enough for the music industry! And, when Jimmy (Jam) and Terry (Lewis) came home from LA one summer night – after THEY’D got kicked outta The Time by Prince – they came into this club I was performing at in downtown Minneapolis and were like ‘Alex, when we get our plans off the ground we’re gonna get you a record deal’. And that’s exactly what they DID!”

Wow…if Alexander O’Neal’s story is accurate, then the way he was fired was cold to say the last. But you never know, Prince may have had a different recollection of the way things went down. For example, O’Neal never made it a secret that he’s battled with drug addiction for 30+ years, so could that have been a contributing factor in this scenario as well? Who knows? We certainly don’t, but it is worth mentioning. Now, if Prince simply fired O’Neal for being a dark skinned brotha, then that was incredibly foul on so many levels.

We appreciate Alexander O’Neal for being so transparent about this; and  may Prince continue to rest in peace and power.

Prince and Rick James

Although it wasn’t widely known, back in the day that the two beloved icons, Rick James and Prince, had some serious ongoing tension between them, Rick made it public record when he revealed in detail why he wanted to “kick Prince’s a$$” (as he stated) in his autobiography, ‘Glow.’ In case you missed our previous report on what really went down between the “Cold Blooded” crooner and ‘The Purple One’ to spark said beef, you can check it out HERE.

Anywho…now that the cat’s outta the bag, Rick’s daughter, Ty James, has added her side of the story and it’s pretty interesting…

THE BEEF WAS REALLY REAL…AND THIS PROVES IT

Rick James with his daughter, Ty James

What Ty James revealed explains just how REAL the beef was between her Pops and Prince. She did an interview with Soul Train a while back, sharing a funny story about how her pops, Rick James,
REFUSED to have any signs of Prince in their home, and made her get rid of her favorite Prince tapes:
Ty James with her dad, Rick James

Ty James: I was basically forbidden to listen to Prince. As a child, you don’t know what’s forbidden; you just like what you like. I’d be in my room, playing my little cassettes and dancing around and I loved these songs! I mean, who could not like “Little Red Corvette?” My dad would come in my room and hit the ceiling! He’d say, “Turn that [expletive] off!” We had a “Prince-free” home! I’d think, ‘Hey, I can’t help it because y’all got beef—I like Prince!’

Well damn, LOL. Rick wasn’t having that at all.

Overall, it’s sad that these two icons had to depart so soon and at almost the same age- Rick was 56 when he died in August 2004 and Prince was 57 when he passed in April 2016. Thankfully, we still have their great music and entertaining life stories, like this one, to remember them by though.

Prince and Chaka Khan

Chaka Khan told a very interesting story about the time that she first met the late, great, Prince. Although Chaka and Prince became really good friends afterwards and she referred to him as her brother, their first encounter wasn’t exactly what Chaka was expecting. In fact, she admitted that she was actually somewhat disappointed at first. But once you see the rest of what Chaka had to say, you’ll understand why.

They ultimately developed a brother-sister type of bond, but Chaka says it wasn’t always like that. ILOSM family, check out what she revealed below.

CHAKA WAS NOT EXCITED TO MEET PRINCE: “He Tricked Me”

In her book, “Through The Fire,” Chaka Khan revealed this about the day that she met a then-unknown Prince:

“I met Prince because he tricked me, sometime in the 1970’s, while I was playing San Francisco. I was in a hotel when my phone rung. It was Prince pretending to be Sly Stone. I said, “I didn’t know you were in town!” It had been a long time since I’d seen or spoken to Sly Stone. Could I come meet him at the studio he was working in? ‘Sure!'”

But See What Happened Once Chaka Got To The Studio…

CHAKA FINDS OUT SLY STONE WASN’T THERE

Music icon, Sly Stone

Chaka continued, “When I got to the studio, we couldn’t find Sly or anybody else for that matter, until we stepped in this one little room and spied this skinny little guy with a humongous Afro. I asked, “You seen Sly?” He replied, “That was me that called you.” I asked, ‘And who the hell are you?'”

“Even back then Prince was very seductive. As we started talking I wasn’t able to stay pissed at him for long and we kept in touch. Sometime later, I was with a friend who was playing Prince’s album. One song caught me. “Ooh, that’s a great song!” I never forgot that song, ‘I Feel For You.’ Several years later, I did a cover of that song and it became one of my biggest hits.”

Chaka’s “Who the hell are you” comment is too funny and it helps to make us smile in the midst of our sadness of losing such a gifted and caring entertainer.

CHAKA PAID BEAUTIFUL HOMAGE TO PRINCE

After the beloved Prince passed away on April 21, 2016, Chaka Khan took to social media to expresses her love for her friend. This is the photo and caption she posted: “I LOVED him. The world LOVED him. Now he’s at peace with his Father. Rest in power @prince, my brother.”

It’s great that Chaka and Prince’s initial meeting went from disastrous, to a lifetime of friendship.

Sade

ILOSM family, before we get into why music icon, Sade, called the late, great Prince, “trashy,” we wanna first send her some love simply for giving us all timeless R&B classics that are still applause-worthy to this day. By the way, the 63-year-old is still hella sexy these days too, but I digress…

Anywho, for years I’ve wondered why Sade was so ‘shy,’ when it came to doing interviews- which she mostly ran away from like the plague. However, after reading her very candid 1988 interview with Interview Magazine, I’m now starting to think she’s ‘shied away’ from interviews not because she’s ‘shy’…but instead, because she’s too real. Therefore, Sade has probably concluded that it’d be wise to keep her opinions on the low. But there was one time when she let her real opinions fly…and the iconic Prince was on the receiving end of that..

Sade Had No Problem Speaking Her Mind

The Nigerian-British songstress hails from a bloodline of people known for speaking their minds. Her Pops was Nigerian and her Moms was British. Both Nigerians and Brits are widely known for telling it like it is. So, Sade seemingly inherited those traits, which displayed in her interview with Interview Magazine.

Sade Was Asked If Being A “Perfectionist” Helped Her Music, Then She Mentioned Prince

“Perhaps it’s detrimental in a way. Somebody like Prince, for instance — I think he’s quite slapdash. He’s a bit like a bull—he goes in with his horns down and charges, but there’s a chance he’s going to hit the right spot. He produces a lot.”- Sade, 1988

“Much Of What He Does Is Trashy”

Sade: “I think much of what he (Prince) does is quite trashy and don’t like it all, but every now and then he does something that is really genius. He’s very, very talented, but the most important thing about Prince is that he’s braver than a lot of other people.”

Sade Then Made A Personal Confession

Sade: “I don’t think I’m as brave as that. I may be too proud and scared of losing face, and maybe that does somewhat stifle what we do. Maybe I look too closely at what we do, and it’s not necessary to be that concerned.”

Sade Also Revealed The “Rumors” About Her That She Hates

Sade Complained About Rumors Surrounding Her Love Life

“Every time the press talked about me, the headlines were  ‘Lovesick Sade, Sad, Sad, Sade, things like that. They would say, ‘Lovesick Sade is shut away in her penthouse flat,’ as if I were Marie Antoinette; anyone would think I had a moat around my house.” – Sade

“They Think I’m Barry Manilow! LOL”

“Then they said, ‘Lovesick Sade is having a glass window put above her bed so she can gaze at the stars in her lonely nights,’ or something like that. …And they said that I was having a dance floor put in my living room. They think I’m Barry Manilow! [laughs]”

Sade Is Reserved, But Her Transgender Son Is The TOTAL Opposite

[L] Sade; [R] Sade’s biological daughter [born as Mickaila] prior to becoming her transgender son, Izaak Theo
In 2016, Sade’s, daughter, Mickailia (pictured above as a biological female), publicly came out as her transgender son, Izaak Theo, on ‘National Coming Out Day.’ Ever since then, Izaak has been sharing his life, triumphs and struggles as a transgender man with the world.

Sade’s transgender son, Izaak Theo

By May 2018, Izaak, proudly shared a topless photo, on social media, after having his breasts surgically removed. he captioned the above photo with a profound message: “My scars set me free.”

So How Does Sade Feel About Izaak’s Gender Transition?

Sade with her transgender son, Izaak Theo

As y’all can see, Sade couldn’t care less if her daughter is a ‘she,’ or her transgender son is now a ‘he’…she loves her some Izaak Theo unconditionally! It looks like the ‘bravery’ Sade once admired in Prince, is what she now equally admires in her trans son. Beautiful!

(L) Andre Cymone, Prince’s childhood best friend and former band member; (inset photo) Andre and Prince

For those who are die-hard prince fans, you may remember Prince’s childhood best friend and former band member, Andre Cymone. Andre and Prince started out together in music, and Prince even lived with Andre and his family for years as a teenager. That was way back before the fame…and they remained friends ’til Prince’s last day. In fact, Andre talked to Prince soon after Prince made that emergency medical landing just five days before his untimely death.

Shortly after Prince passed away, Andre spoke with Billboard to give Prince’s fans a detailed glimpse into the interesting things they never knew about the Purple One. Check out Andre Cymone’s interview excerpts below…

HOW PRINCE ENDED UP LIVING WITH ANDRE & HIS FAMILY AFTER GETTING KICKED OUT

A.C.: I think what happened is eventually he ran away. He came to our house and asked, “Can I stay here?” I said I’ll have to talk to my mom. I asked her and she was like, “Yeah, but I have to call his mom and let her know that he’s here.” So she called his mom to let her know and they worked it out. So his mom said, “He can stay there if he wants to.” So a day turned into a week, week turned into a month, month turned into a year and a year turned into about five or six years, something like that.

ANDRE CYMONE ON HOW PRINCE’S MOTHER CAME TO DISLIKE HIM

Andre Cymone and Prince

A.C.: “We started the band together right around the same time. Maybe within the week or month, we said we should put a band together. It eventually became Grand Central; we had a few names going on there before. …

I was a very wild kid. I was from the projects. I was a hustler. … I was always talking about we gotta do this, do that, we gotta make some money. He was more laid back. When we put the band together, I was still hustling. I’d be stealing cars, bikes … I was into a lot of crazy stuff. We had moved into a really nice sort of upper middle-class neighborhood and parents didn’t want their kids hanging around me because I was a little rough around the edges.

I think the final straw for [Prince’s] mom was when I pulled up in a brand new Cadillac trying to get Prince to come out and go for a joyride. She forbid Prince to hang out. So every time I’d try to come by and ask can Prince come out and jam, she’d say no. She made him do all kinds of other stuff, anything other than to play with me.”

HOW MORRIS DAY’S MOTHER ALMOST GOT THEM SIGNED TO ISAAC HAYES

Isaac Hayes

A.C.:Our first brush with fame was kind of a false start. Morris [Day’s] mom was beautiful, a gorgeous woman who reminded me of Pam Grier. I was completely and utterly in love. She could say, “We’re doing a gig on the moon” and I’d be early, which was rare for me. But she somehow knew people like Redd Foxx and Isaac Hayes.

She got in touch with Hayes and said she was managing this group with her son and would he be interested in getting involved. I think she must have sent him one of our demos. He said yes and was going to help us become superstars. She told me that and I quit school, telling everyone we’re going to have tutors and all that kind of stuff. Prince was smart. He kept going to school. So all this stuff was supposed to happen [through Isaac Hayes] and then somebody showed me a copy of Jet magazine with a story about Isaac Hayes filing for bankruptcy. I thought, ‘OK, guess I have to go back to school.’ … After that, Prince got his record deal and that became what that became.

ANDRE & PRINCE REMAINED FRIENDS, ANDRE REVEALS LAST TIME THEY PLAYED MUSIC TOGETHER

A.C.: The last time we played together was at this place called The Sayers Club. He had reached out and said, “Listen, I’m playing at The Sayers Club, love for you to come down.” So I went there and he asked if I wanted to come up and do “The Dance Electric.” I was like, “I haven’t played that song in a long time; I don’t know the words.” He’s like, “Don’t worry, I have a teleprompter.” Ok, fair enough, so I did that.

WHAT HAPPENED WHEN HE WENT TO ONE OF PRINCE’S LAST SHOWS

Andre Cymone

A.C.: So we go to the show. Maya Rudolph and all kinds of people were there. I’m given a cool spot to hang out in. Prince was always super cool when I came to his shows. … Then as Prince would do…he had a guy come get me and take me to the other side of the stage. Prince is like, “Come on the stage.” I think he was doing “Housequake” and playing the piano. I go out on stage thinking he’s going to give me a guitar, bass or something. Instead I go onstage and I’m just standing next to him while he’s playing. He’s talking me, telling me about the next chord he’s going to hit. Like, “Check out this one.”

…It was the last song. Right after that, he says, “I want you to meet my band.” So I wind up meeting the band. He tells everybody, “Hey, this is my first bass player.” I’m like, “Yeah and this is my first guitar player” [laughs]. Anyway, that was the last time I saw him perform. … I think that’s the last time I actually saw him. We had a great time. We drank a bottle of Cristal and he introduced me to all the people around. We hung out for awhile.

WHAT PRINCE TOLD ANDRE SOON AFTER HIS EMERGENCY LANDING 5 DAYS BEFORE HIS DEATH

Andre Cymone and Prince

The last time we corresponded was when I heard about the plane [which had an emergency landing because of Prince getting ill mid-flight on April 15]. I reached out to get a hold of him. I called a bunch of different people. I called his sister and she said she’d try to give him the message. I called Bobby Z and he said he’d try to get him the message. Finally, Bobby got a hold of him and he sent a text to me. Bobby pasted it and sent it to me. Prince said, “I’m OK. When I get to L.A., we’ll hook up.” That was it. And I guess maybe five days later he was gone.

His legacy? I think his music is his immortality. That sums it up. It’s hard to say; he did so much. He recorded so much music. What I remember most is just his personality. There was just a lot more to him than what people saw. I’ve heard people say it; everybody who really knew him knows he was a funny dude. Very funny. He had a very interesting sense of humor. As kids we had a lot of fun. To be able to do what we loved and be able to actually be successful at it, especially at the age we were at, it was like a dream come true I’m sure for him and definitely for me. We always threatened to get together and do some stuff. The last time I saw Prince, he said, “Man, we’ve got to get together. We’ve got do something, we gotta play, we gotta jam.” The one regret I have is that I never really took him up on that. -Andre Cymone

Raphael Saadiq

Singer/musician, Raphael Saadiq, has always been a private dude. So, for decades, not much has been known about his past. There’s one fact he revealed in recent years, that most fans of the former Tony! Toni! Toné! lead singer never knew. He once worked for the late, great Prince and when you see what Prince made him do, you will probably flip out…or at least lightly chuckle.

Raphael Saadiq On Working With Prince Back In The Day

In an interview with The Quietus, Raphael Saadiq revealed that at the age of 18 he auditioned to be Prince’s protege’ and also part of the band Prince created for Sheila E., during their “Parade Tour.” He was shocked when he made it, but didn’t let Prince know:

“I was taught by my dad not to look excited at the point Prince said my name. I played the bass guitar in my audition like Prince meant absolutely nothing to me,” [said Saadiq]. It worked, even if Prince’s non-standard take on masculinity would later come as a surprise.

What Prince Made Raphael Saadiq Do

The hilarious part is that Saadiq says in order to be in the band, he really had to become one of “The Blouses” that the late Charlie Murphy once spoke about in his infamous “Chappelle Show” skit. Check out what Saadiq said below…

Raphael Saadiq: “To be in the band you had to wear a ton of make-up, it was mandatory. You had to almost sign a contract to wear eyeliner, blusher and basically look like a girl. That Dave Chappelle skit was no joke, we literally were The Blouses!” After the shows with Prince, Saadiq would transform his appearance getting dressed back into a bomber jacket, Detroit Titans baseball cap and white T-shirt while rocking some 501s and Nike Quartet sneakers. “Prince liked that I dressed differently cos’ he could see I was my own person. I knew when I was playing ‘Erotic City’ in Yokohama, Japan, that my life had sort of changed.”

HILARIOUS! So that Charlie Murphy skit was exactly on point! Gotta love Prince..I tell, ya.’ Saadiq had more to say though…

Saadiq Not Fond Of Grammys, Nor Losing To Jennifer Hudson

Saadiq also discussed the #GrammysSoWhite backlash the Grammy Awards received a few years back, and why he chose to skip them. Not only did the talented musician and singer seemingly feel disrespected by losing to Jennifer Hudson in 2016, but he also agrees that the Grammy’s are out of touch with Black music.

“They’ve [The Grammy Awards] 100% lost their way and are out of touch. I remember The Way I See It lost to J-Hud at the Grammys! I wasn’t even surprised. If you have a day job and work in a corporate building then that’s who that show is for. Britney Spears won a Grammy before Steely Dan, that’s crazy!” Rather than ‘fix the Grammys’ as the likes of Kanye West have suggested, Saadiq says we should just let them die: “There’s no point sitting down and talking about it. All awards shows needs to get off TV and just die. Music would be much better if people didn’t make it for an award.”

Also when randomly asked about Donald Trump, Saadiq kept it real: “He is a comedian and a waste of time.”

These days, Raphael Saadiq is scoring several cable television series, including the hit HBO series, “Insecure,” starring Issa Rae. He’s also been in the studio working on FIRE music for true R&B music lovers to vibe to.

[L] Eric Benet with current wife, Manuela Testolini; [R] Prince with his then-wife, Manuela Testolini
The day Halle Berry’s R&B ex-husband linked up with the ex-wife of the iconic Prince, it was a stroke of fate. They met at a Los Angeles bar and Eric Benet instantly ‘fell in love’ with the woman who seems to have a giving heart. When Eric began dating his now-wife, Manuela Testolini, he thought he’d found his soulmate, which apparently he did. However, what he later learned, was that he’d also found something of a treasure in Manuela, after eventually learning the music icon he idolized was her ex-husband.

Eric has been married to Manuela for 11 years (since 2011). Their wedding came six years after Eric and Halle divorced in 2005; and 5 years after Manuela and Prince divorced in 2006.

How Eric Benet Found Out His Wife Was Prince’s Ex-Wife

It’s unclear exactly what year Manuela and Eric began kickin’ it, but we do know it was during Manuela’s divorce proceedings from her then-hubby, Prince. Eric Benet confirmed this in a prior interview on Van Lathan’s “The Red Pill” podcast. Turns out, he also had no clue who exactly he was dating for at least the first two months of his relationship with Manuela:

Via Yahoo- “We’re seeing each other for, like, a couple of months and during those couple of months she’s telling me that she’s going through a divorce…,” [Eric Benet] said, explaining he realized this was no ordinary split and there was a lot of money at stake.

“Her name is Testolini, so for some reason I thought she was married to some Italian (guy)… I was driving her to the airport… and she gave me some other details and finally I was like, ‘Who is this guy…?’ and so she just kind of laughed and said, ‘Prince’. I was like, ‘Prince who…?’ By that time we were already like (an item).”

Benet Admits He Couldn’t Measure Up To Prince

Embed from Getty Images

Via Yahoo- The fact he was dating Prince’s ex made Eric step up his dating game, adding, “Usually, if I’m dating somebody and I invite her to the studio, it’s like, that’s a thing… It’s like, ‘Wow, I get to see how you create and this is so fascinating’. And then once I found out it was Prince, I was like, ‘I ain’t s**t, man…!’. My studio is (small).”

What Happened When Prince Put Benet On The Spot

As if it wasn’t already pressure enough for the brotha to try to come behind Prince in the dating department, Eric Benet revealed how nervous he was when Prince put him on the spot during their first meeting. In fact, from what the R&B crooner described to Lathan, he was damn near like a dear caught in headlights at that moment.

You see, Eric Benet was just getting his career poppin’ when he met Prince at his concert. Prince was headlining the show and Benet was in the audience, soakin’ up the greatness of the icon who stood before the crowd. In the midst of performing, Prince apparently recognized Benet and called him up on stage. Here’s what happened next though:

Via Music News- “Prince saw me in the audience and told me to get up…,” he recalled. “I kick myself about this… but when you respect somebody (like that), when he pulled me onstage I was blown away… He was doing some jam…”

And when the headliner [Prince] handed Eric the microphone, the young star just freaked out and screamed.

“He said, ‘The next time I invite you onstage you better sing’,” Benet laughed, adding, “Any musician out there now owes a debt to Prince… We’re all standing on the shoulders of that guy.”

Must be a cool feeling for that ‘Prince moment’ to come full circle for Eric Benet. He and his wife now have two beautiful young girls together, and Eric has an older daughter from a prior marriage. Manuela still works with her late ex-husband, Prince’s, philanthropic foundations to this day. She has also built a school in Africa under his name.

Lisa Bonet (R) with daughter, actress Zoë Kravitz; (inset photo) Prince

The Cosby Show and Different World actress, Lisa Bonet, and her rockstar ex-husband, Lenny Kravitz, were probably a tad surprised — along with the rest of their fans — after hearing the little known fun fact their daughter, Zoë Kravitz, publicly revealed about herself and music icon, Prince. At first glance, the now 33-year-old’s story seemed kinda innocent, until it didn’t…well, at least on the iconic Purple One’s side of things.

Okay, before anyone jumps to conclusions about Prince and Zoë, here’s a brief disclaimer: Nah, Prince did NOT try to holla at Lisa and Lenny’s daughter when she as underage…he didn’t get down like that. Now that we’ve cleared that up, scroll down to see what Prince did try to pull with Zoë…or so it seems.

Prince Took Her Home…After She Turned 18…

During a prior interview on The Jimmy Kimmel Show…host, Jimmy, gave a comical side-eye to Zoë (or rather Prince) — as did the audience — when she recalled the time Prince waited until she turned 18 years old to take her home one night. Let us explain…

Ya’ see, Lisa and/or Lenny were cool with Prince, when Zoë was a little girl. As a result, Zoë says that she met Prince a few times as a child. However, according to Zoë, it wasn’t until she’d turned 18, that Prince randomly walked up to her at a nightclub, stood close behind her — as she was windin’ it up on the dance floor with her homegirls — and asked if he could take her home…in his limo…to which, she agreed.

Here’s What Zoë Says Happened Next Though

Prince Called Her Again…Then Zoë Called Him Annoying”…

Embed from Getty Images

Zoë Kravitz then explained that that although Prince didn’t ‘try anything’ with her the night that he’d given her a ride home from the club, he did surprise her by phoning her up soon afterwards. Why? To invite himself to her concert (Zoe’s also a singer). Get this…he actually did show up to see Zoë at her show!

Prince called her later that night…to link up with her…again, says Zoë. She obliged. However, Zoë insists it was innocent, even though Prince seemingly tried to impress her with his accomplishments, by bringing up his the film, Purple Rain. Here’s the shocker though — Zoë eventually thought Prince was “annoying,” but meant it in the most ‘respectful’ way.

While explaining her story to Jimmy Kimmell, he cracked slick jokes in between and it was hilarious. See what else Zoë revealed about her phone calls and personal time with Prince in the video clip below…

From Zoë’s standpoint, it seemed like a young starstruck 18-year-old young lady who was just ecstatic that her idol, Prince, wanted to see her sing, and give her an innocent limo ride home. On the other hand, from Jimmy Kimmel’s — and most other folks’ viewpoint — it sounds like Prince was trying to make his move on Zoë…the LEGAL way. And besides, Lisa Bonet’s and Lenny Kravitz’s daughter does seem like Prince’s ‘type.’

What’chall think, ILOSM fam?’ Was Prince was trying to get with then-18-year-old Zoë Kravitz? Or was he simply being a ‘father figure’ to her?

Quincy Jones (C) with Michael Jackson (L) and Prince (R)

During a prior interview, Quincy Jones, reminisced about how the beloved Michael Jackson and Prince couldn’t stand each other back in the day. Jones gave a first-hand account of what it was like to be in the same room at that time and detailed just how bad MJ’s and Prince’s decades-long beef really got behind the scenes. In particular, Jones recalled two wild incidents he witnessed between the two icons that will crack you up…although back then it was no laughing matter.

QUINCY JONES REVEALED TENSE FILLED INCIDENTS HE WITNESSED BETWEEN MJ & PRINCE

Before we get into why Prince to try to run over Michael Jackson with his car, here’s one more OLD SCHOOL fun fact Quincy Jones revealed: MJ wanted his hit, “Who’s Bad,” to be a collaboration with — get this — Prince! That would have been MAJOR, but also disastrous, because MJ and Prince had already had a long history of beef, which is where Quincy’s story gets really interesting below…

JONES ON WHY PRINCE TRIED TO HIT MJ AND LA TOYA WITH HIS LIMO!

Prince and Michael Jackson

Quincy Jones recalled the time that he witnessed Prince try to hit Michael and La Toya Jackson with his limo. And apparently, Prince did so gangsta style…by waiting for them in the parking lot after James Brown’s concert!

Quincy Jones: “Have you ever seen the video of them [Prince and Michael] at James Brown’s gig? [Prince] always had this thing with Michael (laughs), they would CLASH (laughs). But [at that time] Michael had 25 years of experience, Prince had 5 years. So Michael went up there [on stage with James Brown] sang for about 15 seconds then moonwalked for about 15 seconds. And then he whispered in James Brown’s ear to ‘Let Prince come up.’

Prince jumped up on the back of his bodyguard, took his gloves off and threw ’em at them [Michael and his crew], then they threw ’em back at him…and then [Prince] came up and tried to challenge Michael. That’s not the way you do cameos, man. You join the family, you don’t fight with each other or try to compete with each other. He made a fool out of himself that night. So Prince] waited for them [Michael, Latoya and their crew] after the show in his limousine and he tried to run over La Toya and Michael (laughs). That was some drama Mama! There was ALWAYS some drama. Michael loved drama! -Source

QUINCY JONES RECALLS TIME PRINCE TRIED TO CLOWN MJ

Prince; Michael Jackson

Jones explains what happened when he called a meeting with Prince and MJ to convince Prince to be in MJ’s “Bad” video:

“We had a meeting at Michael’s house. I said ‘Michael let’s invite him out and try to talk him into this.’ I had envisioned a fight breaking out in the video, you know some drama, that’s all…and then Michael and Prince coming up to each other and [squashing it]. That’s what videos are all about- tension and release.

Jones continued:

“So Prince comes out and I say ‘Michael you sit on that side. I’ll sit on the other side. And let him sit there so he doesn’t feel like we’re ganging up on him (laughs). He [Prince] came in with a big box of stuff, he’d just finished “Under The cherry Moon…directing it- He had this box of stuff, it was WEIRD man. He had some Tootsie rolls and some cuff links and stuff like that…a lot of stuff, Michael thought it was voodoo (laughs). And then he said ‘I’m sorry to keep you all [waiting] this long..and then he called Michael ‘Camille’ (LOL),” explains Jones.

This was crazy…and hilarious! Through it all, Prince and MJ respected each other’s talents, and years later they thankfully squashed their beef.

Morris Day; Prince

Morris Day of The Time once did an interview to speak about his friend, Prince, after he’d passed away on April 21, 2016, from a reported overdose of fentanyl. Let’s pause to let the realization that it’s been over five years sink in. Seems like it wasn’t that long ago that we were hit with the sad news of the icon’s shocking death. During Morris Day’s Rolling Stone interview, he shared some interesting info about his last visit with Prince.

Morris Day Describes Meeting w/Prince 2 Months Before His Death

There was one thing that really stood out about Morris’s interview and that is what he described about his last visit to chill out with Prince at his Paisley Park home. Two things made him think something wasn’t right with Prince, but he couldn’t really piece it together at that time:

Prince and Morris Day

RS: Did Prince seem any different to you before he died?

Morris Day: Well, at the time, I thought nothing of it. But in retrospect, I thought maybe something wasn’t right. I thought, he looked thin, even though he always looks fragile. After he passed away, I just wondered if he knew something that he wasn’t telling me. I just felt like he knew. Like he knew that something wasn’t right. Maybe he said it in just being adamant about seeing us again. Maybe that was a sign in itself.

Their Past Tensions

Many of you may recall the past tensions that existed between Prince and The Time band members…it lasted for several decades (even into recent years). So although they loved each other like family (FYI: contrary to popular belief Prince and Morris were not blood relatives, they were just friends who met in high school), there was a lot of time missed between them. But the fact that Prince was so adamant about jammin’ with the group again, combined with what Morris said about Prince’s fragile weight, does make us wonder if Prince really did know he was approaching his final days, and simply wanted to have one last jam session with the cats he started out with.

Morris Day’s Touching New Tribute Song To Prince & Why He was In Denial

Morris Day also released a tribute song titled, “Over That Rainbow,” on The Time’s album, which was executive produced by Snoop Dogg and released on Doggystyle Records. He’s released a video for his Prince tribute, titled, “Over That Rainbow”:

Morris Day: “When we decided to go into the [Doggy Style Records] studio, he [Snoop] was like, “Give me a little time and I promise you it will be a classic.” We were a couple months into the project when Prince passed away. So, we’d been working already and that’s when [“Over That Rainbow”] came. It took me a while to decide if I wanted to put my emotions on the line in a song like that.” [Why?] “I was in denial like a lot of people probably were. I had just been at Paisley Park like two months prior [because] Prince wanted us to come a party with him. … When I found out it was really him [that died] it didn’t really hit me. It took a while to sink in.”

Prince’s Sister & Childhood Friend Said Similar Claims

Morris Day doesn’t stand alone in his assumption that Prince may have known it was his last days. In March (2017) Tyka Nelson, Prince’s sister said the same thing.

Prince’s childhood friend and one of his very first band members, Andre Cymone, also revealed that Prince, whom he hadn’t seen in a while, contacted him and was adamant about having him stop by Paisley Park months before his death, just to vibe and have a jam session like they used to do back in the day. Unfortunately, Andre never got a chance to do that before Prince died.

Rest on Prince, after a phenomenal life fulfilled here on earth through your music and your many charitable efforts to those in need.
